And tell me...which would have grabbed your attention more...the kind of cover you suggest or the one that was made? The kind of cover you suggest doesn't sell books...we've already had people say they'd buy the book just for this cover art alone, even if the content sucked...
And people have also already complained that the covers of the MWDA books are too plain, as they don't show 'Mechs duking it out...

Well, I guess if you're selling to people who are more concerned about a kewl WH40K style cover than the contents of the book, then this is ok. Me, the cover is just a way to keep the book together.
But really, look at all those FASA covers. With the exception of BF2, did any of them show huge battles (and look how well that sold). The House Books, the Wolf's Dragoons SB (couple of people around a table with a one on one in the background), the Wolf and Jade Falcon books, none of them had these kewl overstimulated covers.
The covers of the handful of FP books that have come out are no different than what FASA put out stylistically. Why mess with success, except for that shallow "I'll buy and not even know what is between the covers" customer you were describing earlier?
Why couldn't we have gotten something like the 4th Succession War Atlas cover instead of a WH40Kesque thing?

I can answer that...
FanPro's goal isn't to sell you that book because it knows we will buy it because we play CBT. The goal is to get someone that doesn't play CBT to play the game.
To do that you need an eye catching cover to get them to actually pick the book up and look at it.
And I think the cover does that...

Look to the cover of Shattered Sphere for one...one of the absolute best sourcebooks, as well as one of the best covers ever for a BTech sourcebook...and the battle it shows is very much like the one you see here...if only a smaller portion of it...inside a space that measures perhaps 30 to 40 meters relative in width, and somewhat more distant, I count 16 'Mechs...
As to why make a cover like this, well, I think chihawk has already said it well...
BTW, for those interested, Warner has said that posters of this cover as well as a few others will be produced...they're to be available at GenCon, and they are studying how they want to make them available afterwards...

There are certainly a couple covers (without the title of course) that I'd love to see as a poster.
Just let me know where to send my check

I think the cover is to busy to cluttered and over all unimpressive. It may se a scene we are seeing from a future battle but over all its unappealing. I would rather see a different perspective of it with a third of the units per side. You would have still gotten a busy cover that would still be eye-catching and look better over all. I feel the colors and lay out make the picture look muddy. Every picture NEEDS to have a focal point. With out that the eye wanders around the picture and easily moves onto something else. But thats my opinion.
Granted I am interested to see how many different posters are comming out. I hope that we can even start getting some of the OLD posters back. (The Warhawk for starters would be nice).

The battle look like a Cluster****. There is no Order. It looks like a Melee or a Rout. One can't be sure. There is no direction or leadership in the Formations at all. Maybe an Ambush gone awry???
It would make a Photographers day, but beyond that only Stackpole would have this...
