I have to say I have found the whole virus thing a complete riot these past few big scares, for the simple fact that despite the rather deep tendrils I have reaching into the web, I appear to be almost completely immune.
I'll admit it, with no firewall in place I download Warez, crakz and billions of other 'high risk' files. I open attachments without a second care, but still I get off clean...
Oh, wait. I have my Virus scanner set to auto-update every day, and to scan all executables on opening. I use a non-standard web server, non-standard e-mail server, and only use my e-mail through html front ends. (sorry outlook/eudora). I have windows set up to NOT hide file extensions, and only open files once I have verified their REAL extension. I no longer use media player to open ANYTHING (stupid inline VB support for AVI's. The ONLY reason for M$ to have added that was to help spammers).
And most importantly, I run windows update once a week. The patch that would have stopped LoveSan has been available for two months, and got big press when it was released!!! TWO MONTHS!!! I have one major word of advice for any company that got infected with that one: Fire EVERY SINGLE ONE of your IT/MIS people, for it is obvious they have no clue what they are doing. Probably because they are all MSCE's. (Minesweeper Consultants and Solitaire Experts).
Oh, and one major word of advice, if something says to disable your virus scanner, don't bother installing it. This is one of the many reasons I will not own a Nvidia graphics card ever again. To install their 'detonator' drivers (oh yeah, great choice in title there!) you have to disable your virus scanner or guess what, directx doesn't work. Their drivers have always been quirky at best and a royal pain in the ass at worst. Yeah, you might only be open to infection for a few minutes, but a few minutes is all it takes, especially these days with virus' that can infect your computer just from it's sitting there connected to the web. _________________ Happyness is just a word to me

Death Shadow, what you said is what I like to call... common sense. It's amazing the stupid things people will do to/with their computer.

Even though it may look like it is from an individual, you can look into the Header of the e-mail and retrieve a lot of information, such as originating IP address. If the person who is infected has posted here, we can probably match up the IP address with the posters IP address and figure out who it is.
