Anyone ever dealt with one of the on-line mystery shopping agencies?

There's been a few online mystery shopping agencies that I've been looking at, but all want me to pay to join them. As such, there are a few suspicions from one of my family members as to whether or not they are scams.

Any help?

Mystery Shopping-

Those who do it take assignments to go and shop somewhere (or something along those lines). They have certain things that they are to look for and take note of (IE: quality of food and promptness of servers at a resturant) and then report back to whoever they go through; often, it's an intermediary.

Companies are willing to pay for these services for two reasons: One is that it allows them to anonymously check up on their franchises to ensure quality, and the other is that it allows them to anonymously check out the competition.

I've found two websites which do this. I'm still trying to check them both out but the fact remains that both want me to pay them to sign up first. For one site, the payment is for a reference manual and access to the site's databases; I can't figure out what the other wants the money for.

Any "job" that requires you to pay something before getting the job is a scam.

And even if it isn't, it is.
