we have many heated discussions about what mech IS Battletech. But how about what is NOT battletech? i am not going to bother with a little list because there will be more than a few opinions. mine is Land-Air Mechs. Can you say "Veritech"? I thought so...

What mech isn't battletech? They are all battletech! They all show the same warped sense of physics thats a hallmark of the battletech universe!
But specifically I'd have to agree on the veritech, and anything mounting the Heavy Gauss Rifle (MUNCH MUNCH MUNCH), and basically anything that is mass produced.
If you get down to it the BT Universe is one without mass production capability, and therefore the new timeline is completely ridiculous (like how could there still be a strong feudal system with serfs and peasents if there is a strong capitilist economy? Russian Imperial history shows us this can't work). But thats just me.
My game system solves this problem by living in a Cold War like atmosphere with plenty of oppertunity for cold war wackiness!

*coughs* bullshit *coughs* egotistical *coughs*
while LAM's ARE veritechs. why not. as we all know, the makers of bt, got there rights first. but hey why dredge that up?
LAM's as a unit arnt very good. usually too week to be fighter or mech. and i think most will agree that the rules [having been tossed out do to lawsuit] have seen 0 revamping.
i feel that the hybriding of 2 units to one, is a logical forward step. if it suceeds at opperating. so as a scout, the LAM is unsurpassed. because to catch this 1 unit, you need 2. a hunter mech, n a interceptor fighter. 1 to get it ground bound, 1 airbound.
so while LAM's are not exactly bt. there defintly NOT bt. they fite. [barrly]
so what mech is not bt?
hmmmmm. lets think?
how does one judge this? because while some maynot like art, does this make it not bt?
so my awnser is NONE. there all bt.

I would have to say LAMs as well. They just dont seem to fit in with everthing else. I dont think that any of the weapons are too powerful. They all have thier advantages and drawbacks.

hmmm thants what i was expecting from most of you was custom mechs and LAMs but besides that i must agree that none really are not battletech (because i can name almost everymech just by its looks but if you give me anything i might as well have amnesia)

My first answer would have to be protos, as they do not fit in that well with the rest of the technology. But baring that answer I would have to go with LAM's, as their high-tech nature contrasts with the gritty feeling of the rest of the (3025) universe.

I would have to go with Protomechs, to me they aren't Battletech, more like Warhammer 40K trying to sneak in...
As for LAMs, as they were written back in the ORIGINAL TR3025 they were rare, and for the most part if they got used then the House using them really wanted the planet or facotry or what not really bad...hell they didn't even get updated when TR3050 came out so that part stayed the same, rare, high tech items that no one knew what to do with.
As for custom mechs, well again that depends, if the mech is one that millions can be made overnight, (cough TR3060 cough) then sure that starts to push to the limits of the game, but if customs are so bad then why did FASA start off with letting us make our own mechs and vehicles etc...?
So my vote as for what mech is not Battletech would be Protomechs. I can live with the rest so long as the limits of the universe are kept in mind...not add water get mechs line of thinking as we saw in the last two TRs.

I see nothing wrong with the concept of protoechs. There should be something to fill the gap between battle armor and mechs. The way they made the rules for them suck though.

Not that I agree with them, but there are many people that would disagree with that assessment.

I think the Pack Hunter is "not" BTech. Taking Clan Tech and doctrine(albeit Wolf in exile) and twisting it into a design primarily to be used as teaming up combined firepower on a foe.....well that just irks me.
I can accept that the Clans may well be adapting to the inner sphere tactics, but I don't have to like the fact that they're "designing" the mech for that actual purpose.

By gap I meant in tonnage and size. Before protos there was nothing in between the 1 ton battle armor and the 20 ton mechs.
