If it's real. It's pretty damn impressive, How long before mechs start taking the fields of battle?

Well since they are actually tring to build a vehicle that can navigate from califorina to Las Vegas (or vice versa) some 300 miles at 30 miles an hour UNMANNED. I think Mechs are still a long way off.
The thing I wonder about is the Asimo's speaking ability.
If it can. You know it is going to say "I'LL BE BACK".
Sorry couldnt resist.

That has been around for a while. Don't take it as a sign that mechs are on the horizon. The fact that high end defense contractors have some of the technology does not mean it would be a good idea in real life.

| Fine it is not a BattleMech but it is a MECH! It may be a while before they put weapons on one but I expect to see that and maybe other types of utility mechs real soon I imagine the first ones to see military service will be with the engineers rather than a combat machine

Like I say-
The science fiction of yesterday is rapidly becoming the science fact of today. Therefore, when it comes to new innovations, you can either lead, follow, or get out of the way.
Verne called the submarine. Space flight was also called in scifi. Same thing with what we're seeing now in robotics. If nothing else, the world of fiction inspires the world of fact to get things done.

Yeah I hit the link. For what it does its great. I just dont think well see BATTLEmechs anytime soon. Especially since they want to get away from piloted vehicles and living ground troops, The article I read about the race to Vegas stated that they want to go with a control station and have them piloted from there OR to be able to preprogram the data and let the unit DECIDE what it is going to do.
Would I like to see more Mechs? Sure.
Do I see them being on the battle field? Nope. Industrial use only then mabey 50 to 100 years from now. when they are moving with the grace of people, they may consider using it for attacking somthing. But only if its unmanned.

There's always going to be some research that looks to be ahead of it's time. One guy I know dug up this article, http://www.guerrillanews.com/sci-tech/doc2758.html
Basically the Pentagon funds research into the items anyone buys at character creation in CyberPunk 2020.

Wired magazine has two articles out about cybernetics. One has an electronic eye that is functional in place of his non working eye, and another is able to pick up cups and drink from a paralyzed arm.
Both are done with chips and electrodes. One is a brain implant, the other is a kind of bridge.
There was also a discover channel program on "walkers" that allow wheelchair people to stand for a couple of minutes to get something off a shelf.

I do not think Mechs are ever going to be seen. The Terminator movies had the best visuals of the future with self thinking machines and weapons. Look today at some of the new stuff, Predator, or that low mutlitracked tank they used to recon in Tora Bora. So the Honda thing is a PR and research item only.
AWAD- Battle Armor on the hand will happen, Heinlein was right on.

| I disagree with you about mechs never going to be see check that link I put up ,PlusTech is a Division of the John Deere Corporation, that is not a bunch of pie in the sky dreamers that is a down to earth heavyequipmet manufacturer that looks closely at the bottom line if the Timberjack forestry mech was not a practical concept they would not have invested the time and money they have in it ,it is practical and will soon be on the market .Will a Military version be built ?Watching the vidio I could see this type of machine being used in mountainous terrain where a conventional AFV could not go
such a machine could have been quite usefull in Afganistan.
This thing gives all new meaning to the line "Nothing runs like a Deere"

Couldn't you have found an article not so drenched in political righteousness. Heck, the article was lost on me because all I heard in the article was "the Bush administration" this and "the Bush administration" that. It was less about the technology and more about bashing Bush. Must've been those a darned Democrat who wrote it.
