Hi, I have quite a few homebrew designs I want to test with, but quite frankly, I have no real guidelines to work with. So the question from me is, what does anyone here do ususally?

Really, the only thing that you can do is take the design and test it out in combat during some sort of scenario situation.
Design a scenario in which the unit should be at its theoretical best and test it there. For instance, a flight of helicopters armed with LRMs against a team of 3050 Urbanmechs. Then design a scenario in which the unit is at a handicap and have it go there. For instance, a unit w/o jump jets in a mountanous environment.
The main thing that the unit must be tested in combat.

First,
Welcome Demibear,
Next, take you design and run it against a friend, who is a decent player, against a similar BV mech. Next do the same thing execpt at lance level. When that is done, give that design to your friend and repeat. This really shows you its strength and weaknesses. That is if all you care about is mech combat. If you are a total world system guy, then more work. I.E, infantry, VTOL, tanks need to be tested against.
The best idea, post them in the design section and either they will he praised, ripped, or said passable. Do not post if you have thin skin. I use to review all the time but have limited time. Saying everything is could does you no service when you get to the CON and your design, and ass, are handed to you.
AWAD- It is all about balance or a mission designed mech

Ya Tell me about the reveiwers here you have to be some of the roughest around if you post here be prepaired to get hammered ,this is not a criticism the critiques are generaly well thought out just. They are just VERY unforgiving here ,they do not like level 3 and there seem to be a lot of accountants ,if you have a thick skin you can glean some usefull feedback though I notice that there is a tendancy to ignore designs here.
Now as far as testing goes I like to mix new stuff with old in unit actions usualy you are going to deploy them with other units it gives a good idea as to how they will work with other units I have tested 3 marks of the Blizzard that way it gives a realistic assassment of its capabilitys as part of a team .Also it gives a good idea as to what kinds of units would compliment it and what would not.

It seems to me reviewers are pretty harsh no matter what board you're on. But you're right, if we don't like something we'll hammer it.

Actually well thought out L3 is welcomed by most board members. But the munchkin max-out-a-single-variable is generally frowned upon. I like L3, just not LAM's and turbochargers.

That's probably more due to the amount of traffic Mordel's gets now. There used to be a lot more activity before CBT popped up.
I don't really test any of my mechs, so I can't offer any sound advice there. Most of my mechs are just scratches on paper (or files in the directory tree since I downloaded TDB) that never see the light of day. Back when I did get chances to test out homebrew mechs, 8 years or so ago, I just threw them into the meat grinder (usually lance vs lance battle) and saw what happened.

Traffic is picking up here again as the "novelty" of an officail CBT site is wearing off.
Traffic is going to increase even more one all the enhancements here are finished.

I hope you're right. I have always preferred the independent fan boards to the official Btech boards. Less space savers, more content.

I think a lot of what has happened is that a lot of people for Ricks board have come over here liked it and added it to their list so now these people that includes myself now hang out on both boards which means that the word is travelling both ways as I have noticed a few people from here a coming to visit over there .

That depends or your experience in playing the game. My solution is to take it to the arena and match it up against proven Mechs. ( IF you play solaris 7) but the design makes NO difference. really. I can give my MAD-51R to some fresh meat and take me lil 'ole Jenner and pound it into scrap. the player is SO much more important than the equipment..

| I will second that on more than one occasion I have defeated people with superrior forces by out thinking them or with the use of unexpected agressevness like sending a Dervish to flight with a Locust LCT-1E simply because I charged him like a manic and scared him by my agressivness casausing him to jump behind cover to get away from an agressivly handled mech 1/3 his size

You can also post your designs on the Heavy Metal forums, and you will get a lot of feedback there too.
