I have been an on-off member at this board since November or December 1998, quite some time now. I have gotten to know many people who are now long gone.
Seeing as I visited Vampire's website and just read up on old posts, my questions are:
How long has Mordel's existed in one or the other incarnation? I read the 1996 Mordellian Awards, quite amazing. How did it get started, with what on its mind? How did the community first get together (keeping in mind the many empty message-boards that I've run into in the past years)? Is anyone still in touch with the crowd of five years ago? Many 'legendary' people I actually still met - illKhan Frank, Headhunter, George/Jorge, Major Dan, the great Carlos who stayed on for longer than the rest.....
I hope I haven't crossed any lines with this post, just got into the mood. _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior

As far as I can recollect Mordel has been around forever....well just after the Big Bang anyway!

I havn't been around for much more than I year, so only Headhunter Rings a bell in your list of names, I believe he drops in from time to time.

Well, that's a long story. I don't remember how long my site has been around for. I remember working on it back in the days when I was going to college full time still. I graduated in 1999, but went part time for about 2-3 years. I got my first computer around 1991 and spend the first year or two wasting all my cash on BattleTech VGA on GEnie at $7.50/hr.
I think the main reason I started the site was just to try and do something cool. Then one of our web design classes the project was to create a site. I sorta already had one, so just built upon it. From there it was a matter of getting a message board and adding things as the years have gone on.
The old-timers remember the Queen midi I had playing when you went to the site. The old sorta metallic gray/black background with the lime green links. It wasn't the prettiest of sites, but then again, I did always have those cool pictures when the page loaded. The battle armor scans, etc.
I can't really say what attracted people to the site. At the time I had a complete novels list that was ordered chronologically. A lot of people came just for that. I had monthly quizes/contests (which I plan on bringing back) that a lot of people participated in. In general, I think people just saw a place run by a guy who loved the game as much as they did.
Does anyone here remember the time when the board was run by ghosts. I didn't post in what was probably over a year. I remember reading posts and people were asking if anyone has ever seen me before. There were rumors that I didn't actually exist. Kinda humorous. And more of you remember the time Mordel's was down for quite a while. Many of you simply posted on the temp board until mine was back up. I never knew such loyalty until then.
In all honesty, I owe a lot of what my site has become to the folks that have been here over the years. Yes, even those folks that were part of the huge flame war when I was at TotalCon (the year I learned to bring a laptop with me) and couldn't read the boards. I came back to find the site locked down and lawsuits being threatened. All of that and more has shaped this site and this board.
Although I've never met many of you, I've created a sort of freindship where if I met you at a Con, I could start talking to you as if we've been friends for years (because, in a way, we have).
I think someone should put together a history book.

Ah the good ol' days. I don't think there are any old timers who weren't involved in that flame war. Of course, many who were involved are gone now: Cadet, Raven, Camille, and more. The memories . . .

Yeah, give me an update! I know that Cadet had some huge personal problems, and pretty much broke with BT et al. But what else happened during the last year? What ever happened to Camille? Wasn't she almost semi-official (the "Godmom") back in the FASA days? She was always rather unpleasant on these boards, but what happened? Wasn't there another semi-FASA person, Nadin?
But main question: Where is Raven?!? He was one of the main-stays when I dropped out for a while, and always going strong....
Give me the news, people! Thanks in advance! _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior

Hey! I feel old now! I've actually been around for all stages that you've described! I never thought that your old site was ugly - I actually really liked that green/grey background. But then, I also liked the white site, and honestly, I think this is the best incarnation so far!
Here is a sincere and heartfelt thank you to Mordel. Honestly, isolated in Germany where I only meet players on travels (or I drag my brother to a board), I think BT would've gone down-hill. But with Mordel's board over the years (and chihawk's PBeMs in recent years - thanks again), BT is a virtual reality. Thanks so much!
Mordel and Chihawk - would you ever consider putting up an interactive PBeM again, as featured on Mordel's first site? I really, really loved how the map was basically interactive, and one just submitted the moves on the page....
Mordel, do you still have the files for all those designs submitted way back in your old site? I submitted some that I really liked but have now forgotten...... Same goes for the old 'reports' of those interactive PBeMs - even for no other purpose to look at other players' gaming - that underwater battle was a lot of fun!
Anyway, thanks again Mordel! Well, I, for one, am back! _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior

Actually, now that Mordel mentions it: What happened to RavenHeart? He was the guy who kept the group together by setting up the auxiliary board. Anyone still in contact with him? _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior

He came back for a little while, but with the censorship being imposed on all the sites and his lack of good relations with a lot of Btech community members (although he was liked on this site) he just ended up drifting away I guess.

Camille was posting on CBT for a while, but her pace slowed down and I have not seen any sight of her in a while. I think she ended up drifting away too.

Ah yes, Nadin. I believe she was involved for a while and then maybe had some issues with the mods at CBT. I'm pretty sure she got pissed off and left the internet scene.

Last time I saw Raven he was in a big disagreement with most of the members of Mordel's board regarding the legitimacy of the then-possible invasion of Irag. I think he took it too seriously and ended up leaving.
Largely what I've noticed is a lot of old timers just end up drifting away. Old Dog was around for a while but I never see any posts by him anymore. Posts by Ruger are becoming a rarity. I haven't seen Karagin in a while. It's too bad, because our community was better with those people around.

Ruger posts a lot more lately then he used to...being a mod on CBT does take a lot of his time though.
Karagin is/was overseas with his unit (National Guard I believe) and just posted a "howdy" not too long ago.

Mordel and Chandra both tried one within the last couple years and both failed.
I have notes with some ideas to fix the issues that those games had but I haven't had any time to test them, nor have I had the time to discuss them with Mordel. Suffice it to say that if one were to happen here it wouldn't be until the spring of '04 at the earliest.

And working 50 hour weeks, handling various crisises and preparing for an audit at work takes up even more...
And now I apparently get to help prep for a visit by the VP of Quality of TacCom this Tuesday...
This last month has just been pure hell...at least we did fairly well in our audit...

AS males we do not seem to make the bonds as strong. So once a female or a job gets in the way, Btech slides. Also people change.
But some of the people you mentioned did add but also took away. Debate and some conflict do add a lot, but stife, anomosity, and hostility make it unpleasant. That drives some away, and some of those did deserve to be driven away. That is all I have to say.\
But hopefully those still active can bring new blood in. Just like the Military, you have to have new blood.
AWAD- Welcome aboard new guys
