OVERVIEW

The Sentinel, heavily employed by Com Star’s lighter recon units, is the newest target for an upgrade kit. Com Star’s engineers have had a field day with the ancient Sentinel, virtually redesigning the 'Mech. The design team has used the Sentinel’s bulbous and roomy chassis to make use of Endo Steel internal structure, Ferro-Fibrous armour, and a variety of energy-based weapons.

To make the 'Mech a nasty surprise for the unwary, designers used several design quirks of the Sentinel to full advantage. First, instead of using the standard cooling vanes around the PPC that would have revealed its presence, designers wrapped the charging coils in heat-dissipating compounds and placed the capacitor near the engine, using the engine-mounted heat sinks to dissipate the heat caused as the PPC charges. Secondly, instead of altering the form of the 'Mech’s right torso, the designers placed the ER Medium Lasers in recessed bays that fire out of the old SRM launch tubes.

CAPABILITIES

The use of new ER Medium lasers and the ER PPC as primary weapons systems has sharply changed the 'Mech’s mission profiles. Now totally ammunition independent, the Sentinel’s battlefield life is limited only by that of its pilot. The weight saved by employing the much lighter ER PPC went towards installing the C3i computer in the 'Mech’s centre torso, and the use of Endo Steel allowed the 'Mech to carry almost double the armour the older model used.

Engineers replaced the 'Mechs ageing Heat Sinks with the newer, double-strength ‘Freezers’ that have become standard equipment on all new Com Guard 'Mechs.

Unusually, the designers also opted for a full refit of the 'Mech’s actuator packages, using Triple Strength variants obtained through Precentor Martial’s Federated Suns agents. This new musculature system allows the 'Mech to employ its formidable array of energy weapons, providing the activation energy needed to engage the stronger myomer bundles, moving faster and hitting harder.

DEPLOYMENT

Because of the considerable amount of time, effort, and money required to refit the Sentinel to its newer specifications, the upgraded Sentinel will remain rare for quite some time yet. Only four of five refitted Sentinels serve in the Com Guards, and all of those are part of the 12th Army.

MY BLURB

1. Why the energy weapons ?: The Sentinel used abysmal weapons systems. The Ultra AC/5 wasn’t too bad, but contemporary weapons like the ER PPC (or even ER Large Laser, since you average 7.5 damage per Ultra burst, and loose only 1 hex of range if you swap to the Laser any way) do them in. If I wanted to use a higher-caliber weapon, I would have had to use an XL Engine. That would have turned the Sentinel into a nuclear firestorm looking for a place to happen. Since I kind of like the little 'Mech, that idea did not really have too much appeal. The Streak SRM it used to use disappeared very quickly, as an ER Medium Laser has longer range and better damage. Also, since there wasn’t really a way to mount CASE with the tonnage I was working with, I decided that it would be better not to risk a heat-induced explosion and/or an ammo critical hit to ammo that would gut the poor little Sentinel almost 5 times over when it blew.

2. Why the Endo Steel/Ferro-Fibrous/TSM ?: There was space. I needed Endo Steel to mount the C3 system, and after I did that, there were still an ungodly amount of empty critical slots winking at me. I filled them up with Ferro-Fibrous, freeing up another ton, allowing me to use another ER Medium Laser. Since it now overheated at close to 9 points, I decided to stick in the TSM to take advantage of it.

3. The Sentinel in this version does 25 Points of damage, as opposed to the 19 points the STN-3M could do, and the 17 points the STN-4L was capable of. Although that’s not much more, it cannot run out of ammunition, and the C3 it uses allows it much greater versatility.

4. The heavier armour and firepower make the design (according to BV) almost twice as lethal as its forebearer.

OVERVIEW

The Sentinel, long the SLDF’s standard recon/raider, has recently been given new life by Clan Wolf’s technician caste. Upgraded with Clan technology, the Sentinel is a nasty surprise for opponents who are not expecting its enhanced capabilities.

CAPABILITES

Clan Wolf has deployed the Sentinel in ‘mint’ Star League condition for centuries. However, with recent events, the Sentinel has gone through an extensive face-lifting process.

With front-line units getting first crack at ammunition reloads, designers elected to replace the Sentinel’s primarily ballistic and missile armament with a solely energy-based weapons system.

A Large Pulse Laser replaces the Sentinel’s older Ultra Auto Cannon, giving the ‘Mech a weapon that has almost identical range and damage profiles, but a much greater chance to hit. The old Streak SRM-2, although ammunition efficient, was removed in favour of laser weapons; including the upgraded Medium Laser, the Sentinel IIC packs a secondary armament of 3 ER Medium Lasers.

These energy weapons together produce four times the amount of heat the older Sentinel used to create, so Clan designers added four additional Double Heat Sinks to the 'Mech to keep it running cool.

The 'Mech’s standard frame was replaced with Endo Steel, and the Ferro-Fibrous armour was also thickened. Plans to employ an XL engine of a higher class to make the 'Mech swifter were abandoned due to material shortages.

DEPLOYMENT

Clan Wolf currently possesses about 40 upgraded Sentinels. They are spread throughout the second-line Galaxies deployed in the Inner Sphere.

MY BLURB

Well, there you have it. Solid, but uninspired.

The Sentinel IIC will give any 'Mech equal or lower in weight a run for its money. Very similar to the Wolf Hound, the 'Mech will work best in prolonged engagements. Benevolently, I have added enough Heat Sinks to go all out and build up 1 (gasp!) heat per turn.

Armour, as you can see, was dramatically upped. It’s also capable of doing almost twice as much damage as the original Sentinel-and its BVs have more than doubled to reflect that fact.

One word of warning: armour on any 'Mech this light is a concern. Keep it mobile, or it will die.
