The XL debate brought up some thoughts, What is the best speed by weight class, or just in general a speed that seems to allow the best usage of what that class is supposed to accomplish? OK, long winded but it works. I will chime in a little later.

AWAD- Clue, only 2 mechs in the TR 3025 had this speed.

Well, it all depends on weight class.

Light - 7/11/7
Medium - 5/8/5
Heavy 4/6/4
Assault 3/5/3

Notice they all jump. Jump jets are crucial to me as they help you get out of tight situations when needed. 7/11/7 allows for a +4 run or a +4 jump. 5/8/5 if perfect for meds as allows for a +2 walk or +3 run or jump.

The 4/6/4 was arbitrary. It only provides a little better speed than 3/5/3, but is crucial for heavies that don't usually have as much armor to allow them to close. If you can, bump this up to 5/8/5 as well.

3/5/3 is great for assaults. You aren't suppose to move quick, you're an assault! Still speedy enough for +2 run on open terrain.

That is a good question. personaly I have found the best thing to do is find out what is the worst( ie: 2/3 in an assult mech) then figure out what you want the mech to do(fighting ability) that will tell you how fast it should go then start the design process. Quick rule is the faster the better for me. but if I want hitting power or some major elint I have been known to cut the speed down. remember speed will let you run away if you need to ( and who hasn't done that?) but killing people wins your battles.

Speed is of less importance than mobility. Like Mordel, I agrree that Jump Jets are an indispensable part of mobility. You can run 10 - 11 hexes but if you have to turn every other step then what good is the speed.

Lights 6/9/6
Mediums - 5/8/5
Heavies - 4/6/4 or 5/8/5
Assault - 4/6/4

Slight dissagreement. I drop JJ's from some of my stuff just becouse I like to punch holes in peoples CT's and need the firepower. and have even been known to run ( start laughing...) 3/5 on an assult. BUT I have also been known as the type of player who will run someone ragged in Iron Mount. ( On Solaris 7 for those who don't know about it) with one of my hot rods. boils down to what you want the mech ( and lance/ect...) to be able to do ( and what your 'style' of playing is!). you want an anchor heavys/assults you drop the BS and built "bricks" you want shoot and scoots. put JJ's/XL/and MASC. ( I HATE MASC! always rolling snake eyes!)

The best speeds for any mech is 5-8-5 or 6-9-0.

And anyone that lists 4-6-4 for any mech needs to be smacked about the head with a wet noodle at least until they stop enjoying it. If you have to be 4-6 you want to be 4-6-3...the extra jump MP often gains you nothing, you'd do better with more armor, ammo, HS, or another weapon vs what that JJ gets you.

I'll tend to Agree with Chihawk here, 5/8/5, but as for the 6/9/0, I think it has to be 6/9/6. First Off, JJ = Mobility= Survival. Either you can get places where he doesn't want you to be, or you can get away that much easier. Think about ityou could jump into woods to block your opponents LOS or Over a Building or Hill as well, again Blocking LOS. But Most importantly JJs allow you to land any facing you want allowing you to protect certian sides or if you can't quite get that great position for that shot by walking or running, you can always jump there, regardless of your heat level, since youe Jump MP nevers changes.

5/8/5 is the perfect speed for a mech. Tho I am not at all opposed to seeing a lith with a 7/11/0.

Like Chihawk says there is no good reason to make a 4/6/4, drop the extra JJ an slap on a ML if nothing else.

And the Fellow Drac gets it right. OK it is an opinion. But 7/11 is an incredible speed. Look at the Jenner? One of the premier Mechs. What if you did the same to the Cicada, POS becomes viable. The Assassin has trouble due to the Jump Jets. For the cost of an SRM 2 to re replaced with a SL, the Wasp can move 7/11/7 (been a while but I think the math holds) That is a better scout, and combatant.

I do not think Jump Jets are required at all. If you are light and move only 6/9, then hell yes. For heavies they do nothing, unless it is a heavy that moves 3/5. But the 4/6 is a base move that works. If you are a close in fighter, then jumping 3 or 4 works. 5/8 works fine on its own but rocks if it jumps 5 also, but only for medium Mechs. 8/12 is a little overkill, but has minor merits, and jumping 8 is Looney Toons. Yeah it is hard to hit, but what if the Spider jumped only 7? Still +4 to be it, and an extra 1/2 ton of armor when it does get tagged.

But in 3050 some of these numbers change some.

AWAD- Why even use 9/14? Just swallow and go 10/

Light - 7/11/7 or 8/12/8

Meds - 6/9/6 or 5/8/5

Heavies - 4/6/4 or 5/8/5 at the lighter end (or using XL's)

Assaults - 3/5/3 or 4/6/4 at the lighter end

The problem with saying 7/11 is the "perfect" speed is most mechs can't go that fast without using an XL.

If you are a "table break monster" 5/8/5 is the speed that many mechs can get to without the need for an XL....6/9 gets you enough MP to get the good table breaks (5 hexes walked, 7 hexes run) that the JJ aren't important.

Your point?

You'll notice I said MOST mechs can't reach that speed....

I am a big fan of the 5-8-5 myself, but with the advent of the light engine I could certainly see more designs with 6-9-5.

I don't think assaults should ever have jump jets. yes I know it's kewl to jump out of harms way, backward or into woods or something, but it's just not my style for "assaults". Crikey...it's an assault, not a silly english kanigit..."run away, run away!".

I suppose you are the only one qualified to punish Mordel as such!
