I have heard it said that Battletech has its roots in a WWII tank combat game. Is this true? Does anybody know the tank combat game?

It also been reported that the original fluff for some of the weapon systems was borrowed from somewhere. Does anybody know from where? Or is that just a rumor that has no basis?

1) The story goes that a guy named Sam Lewis came up with a WWII tactical tank game, and FASA told him to adapt it to Battletech

2) The technical background info was borrowed from Hero Games, it says so in a copyright notice dated 1984 in the credits of Battletech 2nd Edition rulebook

Interesting. So was the tank game ever produced independently?

What I'm wondering is how unique Battletech's game system is. It seems to me that most of it is pretty generic, with only the names of weapons and units standing out. But I have not played enough tactical wargames to know if this is true or not.

Thanks.

Hey! I worked for Hero Games in 1984!
