Omnimechs add more uncertainty to your forces than a pile of newly designed (and soon to be outdated) mechs.

Actually, after thinking about it, I must side with FASA for one simple reason: business. Think of it this way:
You have a series of action figures, and you personally like many of the figures from the line, especially some of the older ones. The problem is, some of the kids that you are marketing your line to are starting to get tired of just having those ones. So, you have two choices: 1. you do as much with those characters as possible (new molds, mini-teams, etc.) in the hopes of them at least going out with a bang, or 2. you introduce new blood into the line and do some new characters, even though you know that some of them will be rush jobs and many of the newer ones will probably not catch on. Either way, in order to stay afloat, you risk alienating the more hard-core collectors in order to keep the ever-younger generations of would-be customers coming. (And if you don't quite believe me that this is how it works, go to www.yojoe.com and look at the Joe figures Hasbro put out over the years. The you'll see.)

See, there you go again trying to apply LOGIC to this whole thing. The reason they make more 'mechs is the Mini's. The more DIFFERENT mini's they make the more people will buy. If its just a bunch omni's nobody would care.

AHHH but Ral Partha failed on this account. COuld you buy the various configurations? No. Yes you had some boxed sets with a few alternate weapons and the weapons blisters you could buy later but they missed it. Imagine if they packaged a Ghost Bear BOx set with the Vuluture variant they used? Then they would sell more. Or sell individual blisters with a certain configuration. This would have worked.
Yes more different types would have had to happen to promote sales, but not so many.
AWAD- Look how many Lancelots you could find at a store even today

I will never understand why FASA refused to make new images for the Unseen. I understand that they wanted to emphasize their own designs, but surely at some point when listening to ther legions of fans that cried out for them to be redrawn...oh wait. They never listened to the fans. They kept producing total crap and ignored us. And they wonder why they went under.

The main reason why regular designs are still being made, as opposed to just doing omnimechs, is the cost. Omni-mechs are more expensive. Plus, you have to haul around all of the weapons and other pods for all of the different configurations you intend to use. A well organized unit of standard mechs can accomplish most missions that a lance of omni-mechs could for far less money. Apply this on a national scale, and the amount of savings between regular and omni-mechs means you can put more regular mechs in the field.

We are talking Clans here. Second line mechs made sense. EVen the the IICs had some merit (even though it was a guise to try and make the UNSEEN). But they are like proxy fighters. They use only a portion of there forces for a predetermined amout of time and place. This lends to Omnis in a big way. Pl;us when did the Clans give a s**t about economics? Os tons of regular type units made no sense at all; other than as second line units. 100 years ago they were the big bad mechs but the Clans advanced and the regualr mechs were used by freebirths and other scum.
AWAD- And when did the CLanners put physical weapons on their mechs?

I hated IIC mechs. Especially to P-Hawk IIC. Kill it, Kill it now.

The thing is, the entire purpose behind using Omnis has been lost. It was supossed to be a common chassis with weapons depending on the mission. So there should only be 1, maybe 2, of each weight class per Clan.
How many Omni chassis are there now?
We have a huge number of Star League mechs just sitting in stockpiles and the so-called economical Clans don't upgrade them, they just throw them away. Why wouldn't they take a Lancelot and upgrade the technology?
Back when the Clans first hit, remember how the second line soldiers used Star League mechs. Now, they all get brand new designs.
FASA just totally ignored economics

Of course I still thought that each State should have no more than say 10 or 15 types of Mech anyway. Mercs buy from the states.
And for the Clans it would be the same ways, maybe even fewer designs because of trading.
Instead we get tons of designs per state. Imagine the logistics headaches.

well some companies in the states do sell to other states as a means to help the economy of that state. the people who buy these mechs want state-of-the-art mechs and somebody has to provide that to them. in this case is just good business. the economics is quite dirrerent with IS vs. clan
the clans develop technology for thier own use and maybe they will trade or maybe not.
the IS is more prone to trade then the clans are. and the clans will never trade with the IS, which doesn't matter since the IS has so many captured omnis and weapons that eventually they will catch up.
