Since I don't follow it and I've always wondered for years...
What is the +/- statistic and how is it calculated? It always seems to hold some sort of significance to announcers, and I never quite knew what it stood for.

Plus/Minus is a simple stat. Whenever that player is on the ice, and their team scores a goal, their +/- stat goes up by one. If they are on the ice when they get scored on, the stat goes down by one. So a player with a high +/- stat means the lines they play on are strong on both offense and defense, and a negative +/- means they get scored on more than they score.

Ahhhh.... thanks a ton!! That's a question I should've asked a looooong time ago. Especially since I see chihawk at least once a week and numerous other times on IM. One would've thought that it should've occurred to me to just ask him.

You should have asked me because Peter only got it half right.
What he said is true except you do not get a plus when your team scores and you're on the power play and you do not get a minus when your team is scored upon when shorthanded.
