I'm getting started in Battletech (in Iraq, of all places). One of the guys in my unit brought his 4th Ed along for the ride when we got deployed and I've been playing for about a month now.
Now that we actually have 'net access for the first time in 9 months, I see that there are 2 versions of Battletech-4th Ed and Classic. Which is better, in your opinions? I'm definately goming to stick with B'tech when I get home (I already play Star Fleet Battles) and am wondering which to buy.
Could someone explain the differences between the two systems- if any?

Classic is better overall. You get to paint you're own minis....
4th Ed. Is faster to learn, but everything is done for you allready....

They're both the same game system.
The Classic one is basically the 5th edition, however the name of the boardgame changed when Wizkids began developing MWDA.
The Classic box has got a few things going for it compared to the 4th. You have the same travel-handy counters in C that you had in the 4th, although I personally prefer most of the art in the 4th box. There's a lot more color and art in the C box than the 4th one, and the Quick game rules are a handy tool as well. Last but not least the poster-map of the Inner Sphere is pretty cool.
The Classic box is probably a better buy, and likely easier to find as well. However, if you find both at the normal price, there is a difference between the two. If the difference is significant to you, you won't loose much functionality by going for the cheaper 4th box. If the few dollars in difference ($5? $10?) don't matter to you, you'll get more out of the Classic box.
Welcome aboard! I hope you'll enjoy the game, and I'm pretty sure you'll like hanging around at Mordel's. Make sure you spend a couple of hours going through the tons of stuff he has up. I'm sure you'll find a lot of it immensely useful. At the very least sign up in the player database.

Wow, look at Paul posting wonderful stuff about my site. He's gonna make me cry if he doesn't stop.
Seriously though, welcome aboard. It's always great to see new faces, especially here on the board and this site. I'm sure your time will be limited here being that you have limited access. We have at least 1 other person on this board over in Iraq and countless others in the military.
I try to keep adding to this site, but hopefully you'll find it packed with useful information. Let me know if you need help with anything.

I must second everyone welcome. It is great to that BattleTech can still draw new people and stir the dormant needs within those that lift the game for a while ( I will raise my hand to that). As a newbie to this site, I have to say that it is superbly put together. You will find a great deal of useful info here and if you can't find it, just ask. You will get the answers you are looking for and more.
Welcome aboard. Just remember to take the salt tablets. I always carried a pack of salt as an early dehydration test. Put some in your palm and lick it. If it tastes salty, then you're ok. If not, just keep on licking until it does.

Well, I gotta earn my credits somehow.
I can BS, but I try not to give praise where none is due. In my eyes there's plenty on this site you deserve some back patting for. It's a powerful resource for newbies and vet's alike.
I'm not too worried about your ego expanding because of the above. Seems people manage to keep you humble in chihawk's PBEMs.

Score one for Paul. Yes, for some reason I don't always do well at chihawk's PBeM games. My luck has gotta change, right? I've been saying that for 3 years now about the football pool we have at work, and I've yet to win a single damn week. So I guess it doesn't always have to change.
About the ego though. What good could an ego possibly do for a god of my stature?

LOL!
Well, I'm not much to talk since I usuaully last about as long or far shorter than you do. I also seem to make a habit of showing up with the wrong Mech for a particular party. So I'm not sure where I have room to talk trash about you, but I'm not going to let that stop me.

Clearly, any decent god must have a sense of humor. Any form of ego would simply be another target. What selfrespecting god wouldn't laugh when presented with a mirror? =)

Don't always do well? Shouldn't that phrase be don't ever do well?

Hey, I was final 4 two times. Once I lost to you and once I lost to Casey. I don't consider that too shabby. So I must be doing something partially right.
