Overview
Designed shortly after the Nova, the Katyushas is designed to do what the Nova cannot do: attack a dropship head on with a reasonable chance of success. This idea was also a development of the Decembrist trials and combat experience. Although the pirate forces were winning, the heavy assault against their dropships caused them to fall back, letting the Imperials command the battle once more.
The Katyushas is designed to do the same thing. Admiral Chernova places high hopes on the design, noting its similarity to the Nova which has kept costs down. These two weapon systems, in fact, seem to be deployed as the new primary shield against the aggression of Aerospace fighters. How well the designs will do in a combat situation is yet to be determined.
Capabilities
The design, in shape, is similiar to the Nova. It is a round squat little thing, though not pretty to look at, the design makes maximum use of armor and engines for maximum manuverability, flexability, and defense. The cockpit is slightly larger and even comes with limited food and water supplies. The reason for this is that the Katyushas, unlike the Nova, is specifically designed for ambush attacks. Moving to prearranged coordinates, the Katyushas will hang as if rubble, and then when all enemy fighters are engaged, they power up, charge, and bomb their targets.
The fire power of the Katyushas is dependent on the Bomb Cluster. Basically these teardrop shaped charges are packed full of explosive, but no propellent. The bombs are dependent on the aiming of the pilot. This is easier in space, for once the bombs are released, they will travel in a straight line from the point of release until the hit the target and detonate.
If a point of attack is known, Katyushas will often deploy bombs and leave, letting them float silently through space. Scanners typically mark them as tiny and harmless space junk, making them the perfect mine.
Deployment
Currently small numbers of Katyushas are deployed in many areas, as well as modified VSTOL Katyushas for work in atmosphers. These modified versions usually have longer wings and a stronger tail assembly to be useful in a turbulant atmosphere. They can be used to bomb strengthened positions or LZ's.
