The Cicada variant listed does move 7/11, and mounts a PPC to boot! Nasty stuff.

Deathshadow is very repressed. Don't hold those feelings in....
I agree with his assessment, except the size of the flaws they have. I was thinking a Lorry rather than a Mac....

Actually, Pinhead, I found another way to make them useful (albeit a cheesey way).
I was playing in a campaign where the GM ruled that every player (who had a Company of mechs) would start out as follows:
lance leaders: 3G/4P
everyone else: 4G/5P
Additionally, each player had points to spend to bring gun or pilot skills down.
I opted to make my Trebuchet pilot a 2 gunner. He just camped out in distant wooded hexes and lobbed LRMs....the Treb's lack of armor never came into play.

What if the Dervish faced off with a Trebuchet 7K, mounting an AC/5, PPC, and SRM-2. Personally, I would give the Trebuchet the edge in this situation. Between the standard versions though, I would have to reluctantly take the Dervish.

LRM 15s and 20s are one of the best weapons in the game...otherwise though, I have to agree with you.

Mud?
How so?
My reasonings are thus::
I base all my preferences on 4g 5P Inner Sphere platforms..
LRMs hit in 5 point clumps
LRMs have a 2 hex short range... at all other ranges they have a +2 or better modifiers to hit.
In pure tonnage, an LRM15 and 20 both outweigh a PPC, which has a much better effective range, and that doesn't even count adding in ammo.
The only good thing I can say about LRMs is that they have different available munitions which can help make the weapon useful. I would however point out that the addition of the different munitions was an attempt to balance out the uselessness of the weapon.

The primary reason I like them is because they show up on a lot of my favorite 'mechs; Archers, Zeuses, Trebuchets, Whitworths, Crusaders, Catapults. These are not the best duelers, but in lances they are some of the best 'mechs to have around. Additionally, they do sport superior range. Finally, not every weapon can be the most efficient weapon in the game. If everybody walked around in nothing but PPC/Medium Laser boats, the game would get pretty boring.

Mud,
I don't argue that they do have a use, or that they should be removed.
You made me curious when you said that the LRM15 and LRM20 are two of the best weapons in the game. I would agree that the Clan versions of these weapons are very nice, but I think the inner sphere variety are hamstrung.

I just like a lot of the 'mechs they happen to be mounted on...particularly the Archer. That's a beautiful design.

A most painful memory of mine from way way back was getting dumped on by an Archer, both LRMs hitting for all missles...talk about "Shock and Awe"! 40 fricken points! Those 8 five point groups hurt a hell of a lot more than getting hit by two ppcs from a Warhammer...... about twice as much.....
And now with the Artemis IV it's even more likely to happen......

It is interesting to see people's opinions of these mechs ranging from the techno-based reasoning to just unjustifiable personal perference. I like it.
The reason I promoted this discussion is simple... in the realm of hard merc campaigning where you don't have the luxury of being able to use the mech and tonnage of your choice, you are stuck with what is available in your price range, who you hire or what can be picked up as salvage. The remaining mechs in the lance are not there out of choice but out of necessity. This merc force also has a headless Valkyrie and a one legged Locust to add to its numbers (minus the pilots).
There are time when you have to use what you got and hope for better salvage.
I just realized I have been promoted. In traditional military fashion, the next rounds are on me at the mess.
( Alexander will know this well, eh!)
