Why do several different warships have battlemech bays? For instance the Kyushu Class Frigate has a battlemech bay for a whole regiment that does not use seperate command lances, ie the old standard of 108 mechs to a regiment (company 12, x3 companies = batallion, x3 batt = regiment) Sure these mech's can be transferred to dropships, but the only way I see a use for this is if you only have enough dropships for part of your unit, but want to take the whole unit with you without getting more dropships. However all the fluff text says that battlemech transfers in space are kinda difficult, so seems to me that would be a pain. Also the first group of troops on the ground will be all alone without possible reenforcement for several days because the dropship(s) would have to make a round trip back to the warship. This would be lessened to several hours if the warship traveled insystem to orbit the planet I guess. A lot of effort that seems to me.

Your last guess hits the spot, methinks. A warship with mech bays means it can bring more mechs into the system. A regiment that can be planetside in a few days is a lot better than one waiting in the next system...

My battlespace rules had an entry for using mechs on the hull of a ship to provide up close shooting. And if you read the Blood of Kerensky trilogy, at the battle of Radstadt, Clan Wolf deployed mechs onto the hull of the warship to defend it against the Gunzburg Eagles.

Remember, 'mechs are designed to be capable of "airborne" operations, and can be deployed out of warships from orbital distances with relative precision.

Yeah, forgot that with either built in JJ or temporary jump packs mechs are capable of orbital insertion by having ablative pods covering them to protect from the heat generated by the upper atmosphere on re-entry. It even describes that in the novel D.R.T.
Also, regarding the blood of kerensky trilogy, thanks for the reminder. I own all 3 books, but have only read once and a friend is borrowing them atm. I guess if I had a regiment that only had 1 Overlord dropship, then I'd love to have a Warship with mech carrying capacity as my ride into the system

If you read the book starship troopers, not the movie, but the book, the mechs on warships would matchup with how the troopers are dropped.
The warship itself enters atmosphere to drop the mechs. its firpower copuld be used to clear a landing zone or a path that very few system defenses could argue with, plus you save money on dropboats.

The fluff for the Kyushu also mentions that the ship carries special shuttles to ferry the 'Mechs down. That gives 3 different options to land them. Isn't that enough?

I don't have access to the fluff text, was getting my stats off chaosmarch.com but yeah, that's enough
