The forces of BOIL met an element of the old Dark Brotherhood today in the field of battle today, and the results were interesting...
Force 1: BOIL Outreach Program
Barghest
Hauptman Prim
Force 2: Some old heavy lance from the DB
Warhammer
Helios
Galowglas
Jenner F
This was a mismatch game, but is Gangrene's scenrio and he flipped a coin and he got force #1, go fig.
The begining saw both teams split into 2 elements, the Helios, Jenner and Barghest squaring off while the Galowglas, Warhammer and Hauptman went at it.
The Jenner got tagged, but there was little weapons exchange in that area of the fight. The Hauptman and Warhammer exchanged PPC fire for a little bit, then the Galowglas tagged in as well, peppering the big'un with laser fire. The Barghest broke engagement with the Helios and moved in at the Warhammer. The two BOIL 'mechs tag teamed the Warhammer, bringing it down easily.
The Barghest then turned on the Galowglas which had began a retreat into the shallow waters. The 2 exchanged fire for a few seconds until the Galowglas submegred, giving them both a pause in combat. During this time the Hauptman and Helios exchanged fire. The Helios, over gunned and armored by 35 tons, was no real match, but the Hauptman's LB-20x AC had been taken out. The Helios jumped up and brought its entire weight to the upper half of the Hauptman. The resulting damage caused both 'mechs to fall. The Hauptman fell to its right side, destroying the arm and some ammo. The explsion ripped the 'mech's side apart, KO'ing the pilot. The Helios caught its leg on the falling Hauptman and fell with it, smashing its head into the ground and killing the pilot instantly. The Jenner moved in and shot the Hauptman with its lasers, for little effect at all.
The Barghest turned in time to see the Galowglas exit the water, so it ran over to re-engage, but a quick salvo of energy weapons ripped the Barghest's ammo bin open destroying the XL engine. The Galowglas moved in at the still KO'd and prone Hauptman and shot bubles at it, declaring the Hauptman un-fit for combat. The forces of the Dark Brotherhood claimed the victory, but were sad at the loss of the Helios pilot in such a brave manuever.
The game went pretty quick. 2 hours, plus about 20 minutes setup. I think it was a total mismatch (i even said at the begining >,<), but it was a lot of fun, and a nice triumph obver the BOIL Outreach Program.

Next time, Talen . . . next time.
I don't think it was that bad of a mismatch. Luck just wasn't on my side. Your floating crit killed my LB-20X, and I couldn't get a crit or initiative to save my life. Worst was when my Barghest hit your Gallowglas while it was half submerged (read: punch hit location table) with its LB-20X in cluster, and not a single shot hit the head.
Sheesh . . . lady luck must have been pissed off at me for something.

Was this tonnage based or BV based or picked at random?

Sorta picked at random. I don't really like BV, and tonnage is a terrible way to balance battles.

Why do you not like BV? BV is the best thing to even sides in BattleTech that I have ever seen. Simple tonnage can yield some major lopsided battles if you pit a weaker player against a stronger one. Almost everyone uses the BV system, as it allows for Pilot/Gunner modifications which modify it. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

I disagree on BV, it favors the high tech toys and construction materials then anything else. I have had better luck and much more exciting games by pulling mechs at random based on weight and idea of what I think both side should have. The BV system has too many loopholes in it and since a single piece of equipment can give the BV larger or smaller number is not to me very balanced...
An example of this it take a mech and build the same machine on two different chassies, and see if the numbers come up the same...like a 55 tonner over a 65 tonner...if it is balanced then the numbers should either be the same or only off by a couple...
That's my take...part of this based on some of the BV based scenarios in the Battlepack, like the one that has TWO Dragoon mechs holding off twice their number of Kurtian mechs...and from playing one too many Clan Star against an entire 3025 tech IS company...

After reading this a couple times I don't understand what your issue with the BV system is.
Can you be more specific?

I don't think it is balanced enough to give you a fair battle for either side, since piloting/gunnery will off set it as will things like the C3 system, plus in my opinion it doesn't take into account folks using mechs that "munch" construction rules to death and they can get the high or lowest BV numbers and thus force you to repick etc...So I don't use it. I pick mechs by random or say lance on lance pull a tonnage number out of the air and then pick mechs, end results have been some of the best battles fought for me and my group...

OK, C3 adds to the BV of units, and pilot/gunner scores have a multiplier that modifies that BV.
And even if people totally munched out a mech it's reflected in it's BV, so a comprable "cannon" unit could be used to play evenly against it if you wished.
While you're entitled to your opinion, I don't see any basis for it.

That's cool. I just don't use it...though I will play in games were it is used, but if I am running the game, I don't use BV.
