What do most of you guys do in your games. Do you stick with the 'mechs in the books, or do you customize 'mechs fairly freely. If you customize, do you do so for role-playing reasons, or to create more powerful 'mechs.

Most of the games Mordel and I play in are stock designs, but I've never been against a little "personalization" of mechs....like changing an ML to an ERML, adding (or removing) ammo, turning the rear facing weapons to front, etc...

I start games normally with no custom mechs (however I did make an allowance for limited customization in the online game I'm starting). I do allow customization via salvage, or simple weapon placement chages. For instance if my unit captures a Clan ERPPC and wants it adapted to their mechs, I allow that. That is how merc units survive.

It depends on the situation. For scenarios I run usually the mechs are pre-made and players cannot customize them. For free-for-all games it is definitely better to go with a customized mech.

Limited customization. Plain and simple.

Limited customization. Nothing wrong in replacing weapons or doing switches that are documented already. Rebuilding a mech to a different configuration isn't too much off, as long as you can get the parts and the expertise together.

I think limited customisation should be allowed. As long as youremain within the mechs original structure. Fitting a Catapault with 20 pulse lasers is a bit dodgey though, i mean it has missile racks so you should use them. When designing a custom mech i try and stay within the original parameters. If customising a Mad Cat for example, i put missile weapons on the torso's punch weapons in arms and support weapons in the centre torso, etc.

Umm, A Mad Cat is an omni, so that isnt customization, and is far too limiting. See, with omnis you don't customize unless you change the fixed base design, otherwise you are just repodding. What type of Pod you put where don't matter.

Rules-wise this is true, but there are some indications that energy weapons tend to be used in the arms more often than not.

Rules-wise is what matters, not fluff or pictures. Unless you're willing to adopt something like MW4's design system there is no problem with making a Mad Cat into a laser boat.

Thats not entirely true anyways, it isnt energy weapons normally found in the arms, it's primary weapons systems. Be that Large Lasers, Gauss Rifles, PPCs, etc...

Take Mad Cat A for instance:
ERPPC in each arm-primary weapon
3 Medium Pulse Lasers in torso-secondary weapon
Streak SRM-6 in torso-secondary weapon.

Sure the PPCs are energy, but they are the primary weapon system.
The clans mount this way because to them physical combat is dishonorable.

My reply was limited custom. When I run RPG campaigns, custom allowed. What is intresting is I will allow some serious changes but no Clint becomes a Whitworth or other things like endo steel. But the farther away from the factory ther harder. I made PCs take an Engineering skill to design a functioning alternate system. Tech skill was to pull it off or jury rig something. This kept the wholesale radical cahnges in check. Plus all those rolls were in secret. So the the more radical the change, the greater the chance of serious problems on the Battlefield.

As for head to head, just grab the dice and mechs, plus conventions, stock is the only way to go.

AWAD- Still pissed at Chirs Ings for allowing one side make minor custom changes to their mechs at a convention that he was a judge and it was a team vs team.

Stock teaches you use every advantage and Disadvantage to the fullest....

A little 'Personality' is a good thing...

Stock mechs. You have to play with what you have instead of fielding the best mechs you can design. Plus I don't like playing against a mech I don't know the capabilites of...

That's a good enough reason for me. But you make an excellent point. For me anyways, the fun in this game is trying to play a 'mech with the flaws and capabilities that come with it. Not creating a super-munchy design that can always win.
