Having reviewed some of the TRO reviews I've noticed that The Victor and the Zeus are a pair of favorites amongst some of you. I was looking at them and noticed that they are on almost opposite sides of the spectrum in combat, one is long to medium range the other is close range with good mobility. I would like to know who you think would come out on top in a one-on-one battle in mixed terrain(ie, scattered woods and hills).
I think the match-up would be closer than many of you would think.
The Zeus has the range advantage over the Victor but the Victor's jump capabilty should help to even it up in the terrain chosen. Their armor is even in tonnage if not placement. And in a one-on-one situation the ammo concerns for both mechs are pretty well not an issue. The Victor is the hotter running mech of the two with major issues if constant jumping combined with alpha strikes are too frequent. The Zeus can run hot as well if alpha strikes are combined with a lot of movement but nearly as what the Victor has to deal with.
I think this would be an interesting match-up.

I choose Zeus, simply because I've played with both and it seems the better of the 2 in almost any situation. I've never been a big fan of the Victor anyways.

I voted for the Victor. I have also piloted both of them and for some reason(karma?) I've never been able to walk a Zeus off the field after a battle. And when facing them I have taken out Zeus\' more often than Victors though I have faced more Zeus\' than Victors so there may be a ratio thing there but I never kept track of it. Perhaps it was my opponents at the time(hardly skilled in battlefield tactics). Whatever the cause my vote goes to the Victor.
Perhaps I can persuade Oafman to run this scenario with me. He has a pretty good grasp of tactics and unit utilization.

Give me the Zeus. On anything other than a dense city or heavy woods I'll put a hurtin' the Victor at long range before that AC/20 even gets to squeeze off a shot. Not that the Victor can't win, but it's too much of a one-shot 'mech for my taste.

I thank you for the compliment Seraph. I learned from the best. One of my main opponents in college was a History major with a near photographic memory, who specialized in military history. He got both his bachelor's and master's degrees in the same amount of time it took me to get my bachelor's degree. This is why I am eager to play some more, I am always willing to get my butt kicked at this game if it leads me down the road to better game play.

As soon as we finish that bridge scenario then we can tackle this one.

The Victor could win, with an extreme amount of luck, heh. If it managed to find a couple of hexes of Heavy woods to hide in until the Zeus was right on top of it, then walk out and waste it with a couple AC/20 shots, it would win easy. However in the terrain described, at most you'll have a single hex of heavy woods to play with. I get the feeling that Seraph has faced more of the gauss rifle victors instead of this one.

With my style of play I would have to vote for the Victor. In a map with mixed woods and hills, a smart Victor pilot will stick to backs of the hills and hide amonst the woods. The LRM on the Zeus is only useful when it can back off a bit. Which is hard in the terrain described. Also, the LRM 15 on average only does 6-10 damage (at least with my dice). If the Victor plays it right the pilot only needs to hit 50% of the time to out match the LRM.

Not that I am saying that the Zeus cannot win. In order for it to win, it has to be patient and not let the Victor force it into a face to face showdown.

Like Seraph said, this matchup is closer than one might think.

Actually ralgith I have only faced a 3050+ Victor once and have never piloted one.
With the mixed terrain the pilots should make the best use of the field and their machines. It is amazing how easy it is to keep some cover between the two units. And for both machines....it only takes one lucky shot to turn the tide of battle.

This is a close match, but having piloted a Victor for some time, I can say that the design MUST not be underestimated. It has good armor, excellant mobility and a knock out punch. Given that the Zeus would have to be incredibly lucky to hold the range gap, since a full charge by the Victor could be blocked only by full retreat, I give it to the Victor.

Zeus. The Victor is made up around the AC/20 with some suporting guns, fearsome against lights and mediums. Those seldom have the firepower to hurt it at range, though. The Zeus has, and it's no slouch at close range either. This all comes down to one question: can the Victor get within nine hexes without taking too many hits? I think the average maps don't allow it.

The Zeus can reverse its arms though, making a full out-charge laughable. The Zeus can use its full movement backwards, and snipe the Victor to death with its ac/5 and LRMs.

Unless playing in open terrain, the Victor would win. It can close fast enough so that the Zeus would only get off a few shots. Once things get close, the AC5 and LRM15 on the Zeus become marginally useful to useless. The Zeus just does not have enough time to get in enough damage before the AC20 kicks in.

I maybe dense but as I recall the only mech capable of flipping it's arms to face the rear is the Quickdraw QKD-4G. And that's because it states, " The arm actuators are modified so that they will bend to the rear, if necessary, giving the mech the ability to fire all four medium lasers to the rear, but only two ahead."

Zeus

Why: TRADITION! (sorry)

for my there are a couple of things, 1. I just plain like the Zeus more than the Victor and 2. I have ZERO luck with ANYTHING sporting an A/C 20
