Just found out that some freebirth changed the rules in BMR about elevation levels to make them elevation changes cost extra MPs also when descending
Ok, I can understand the rationale when the drop is in 2 levels of elevation... but descending one level WTF??? So in this wonderful final rules set all terrain is to be considered geohexes with vertical clifffaces, there are no slopes.
The hell with it, the hell with Solaris 7 'Mech league, and the hell with anybody that sees to movement more than forward and backwards, left and right, and up and down!

Ummm Vampire.. Hasn't it always been that way?
An elevation change cost you one movement, it was never differentiated between a change up or down?

Thats been the way Ive always played it. It stands to reason that it takes you a little extra caution to move down as well as up, especially if its a steep grade. I could come up with a few reasons why decending one level would be just as treacherous as taking two or three at a shot.
Just one of those things that Man May Never Know.

It seems to me that going down a level has always cost an extra mp.

I always played it as you can go up and forward at the same time in a diagonal direction at the cost of one mp, unless you are going up or down more than one level per hex moved. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

I'm in agreement with most others here. The rulebook has ALWAYS stated that you must pay 1 MP her elevation change. It doesn't matter if it's up or down.
Remember, the extra MP is to duplicate the extra time it may take to traverse the terrain. And personally, I'm always a lot more cautious when I'm going down hill. So if anything, it should be more MP. How many times have you sped up an icy hill as fast as you could. And how many times have you sped down the same icy hill? Exactly...

Plus you're essentially a walking building, have to be careful even with a gyro.

I have an old copy of the BMR that states "Mechs must pay one MP pe elevation change, both up and down." and to give you an idea of the age on the back it says "Celebrating 10 years of Heavymetal Mayhem"

I'll bet the Battledroids rulebook says the same thing...

My copy of the Battletech boxed set rulebook, 2nd Edition, I believe, the one with the Warhammer on the box cover, and the cardboard stand ups, says in the chart at the back.
Movement Costs Table, top right corner
Changing Elevation (Ascending) +1 MP per level
The copyright is dated 1990
It's one thing so obvious that I never bothered to read the Battletech Compendium or the Master Rules on that regard. Proof of the gross incompetency of FASA as rules writers, the rule was changed, some would call it simplification for consistency, I call it lazyness and a desire of not be bothered with questions like : What happens if I drop 2 or more elevation levels? Can I change elevation levels going backwards? etc...

I looked in the rulebooks that came with the 1st edition boxed set, the 2nd edition boxed set, the 3rd edition boxed set, and I looked in the Compendium, the RoW, and both editions of the BMR...all say the exact same thing:
Changing elevations costs 1MP.
As for the other questions you ask, both are answered clearly in every rulebook from the Compendium on...you can only go up or down 2 levels per hex in level 2, and you can't change elevations walking backwards.

How about an extra poitn per level going up, and a pilot roll if you are running down?

Why? There's already a rule for this. Not everything requires a house rule.

And the rule makes sense. Going uphill, you slow down because of the power involved. Going downhill you slow down to be more cautious. Going downhill at full speed, in my experience, is a recipe for disaster.
