I know I'm new here but I have a question.
How come when there is a mission specific mech(recon, scout hunter, fire support,etc..) in thr TRO or custom section there are posts saying how bad it is cause it's not designed to be a front line fighting mech?
I mean no discourtesy to any who may be offended but I am curious.
Granted some mechs need some improvement to survive longer on the battlefield; however those mechs are not designed to be bearing the brunt of an attack.
They are either designed to be fast enough to get out of battle or have long range weapons to stay away from the action but participate.
I hope what I'm trying to say is coming across okay. I'm just curious.

specialization is okay, but you can Over specialize. The cannon griffin for example. LRM and PPC, get in close with some lasers and he is done. The Naga of the clans also has this problem, only a couple of medium lasers for self defense. Yes, they would be part of a lance with a guard mech or two, but the battlefield is unpredictable. I believe a mech should provide a capability for its lance, that is its "specialty", but should always be able to stand on its own as well.

As an example:
On the Naga swap out one of the arrow racks and 1 ton of ammo for an LRM20 and a couple more lasers with armor added. Now you have a mech that can take care of itself while providing lrm and Arrow 4 capability to its star/lance.

Umm, You cant do that Rarich. The Naga is an Omni, so you can't just add armor like that. Sure change the weapons, but no biggie. Not that it matters any, an Arty mech should never get that close to the enemy anyways.

Rarich does have a point, although I have to agree with Seraph. Throughout mechanized warfare, you have always had specialized units. Let's look at today for example. If you follow the doctrine some people are pushing in these reviews, a MLRS would also be armed with a 105 or 120mm cannon ( or at least a 50mm) and some sort or anti-infantry/light vehicle defense (.50 cal or 20mm grenade launcher). The same goes for ancient times when you had archers (fire support), skirmishers or light cavalry (recon) and men-at-arms and heavy cavalry (assault). You could give the archer armor, a shield and a pike (all around capability), but he would be useless as an archer.

This is my line drawn in the sand.

Some people just have to measure each and every unit by how well it does in single combat. Nothing more to it. It's certainly one way of evaluating the forces you'd like to use.

This used to be my philosophy, but I decided I wanted to experiment with more 'mechs other than those few which could be depended upon to dominate their weight class every time. In my estimation, this reduces you to using (in 3025)

Light: Panther, Jenner, Javelin
Medium: Hunchback, Griffin, Phoenix Hawk
Heavy: Thunderbolt, Warhammer, Marauder, Grasshopper, Orion
Assault: Stalker, Atlas, Banshee-S

I am not asking a LongTom to be armed with MG's or medium lasers. If it is on the mapsheet, it needs to be a "well rounded" specialist. That means taking care of busines for a couple of turns until Big Bro' can get to you (your lancemate that is the brawler).

If the main enemy forces have made it all the way to the hex next to your fire support, then they have already out manuevered you. The protection of the missile boats starts further out than that. They should never have to protect themselves directly. Mechs that are built solely for fire support should not be put in a position where it can easily be overrun. Just ask the French, they lost the Battle of Crecy because the English protected their archers.

Yeah, in battletech here's an example.
The Trebuchet was built for a long to medium range support vehicle, it's what the design contract required. A few years later the Centurion was designed and built solely for the purpose of defending the Trebuchet mech.
So you would see lances with 2-3 Trebuchets and 1-2 Centurions. The Trebuchet wasn't expected to get rough with anyone by itself, that was the Centurion's job. With the Trebuchet's help of course.

Mission specific mechs are what make the game interesting, a match full of specific mechs allows a hell of alot more stratagy, with both players trying to sneak forces round to attack the support mechs while simultaneously defending their own brings in some of the best tactics and moments. It makes the game much more dynamic, and using just the alrounders can make all games linear, and turn what should be an interesting strategic game into a slug fest.

I agree Wanello, however some people feel that tactics aren't for btech and that all the fun comes from the carnage dished out. It's frustrating at times to have to deal with that.
Especially when the person won't play anymore cause you defeated his brute force with tactics and maneuvers.

Tactics...fun! Total carnage....for Munchkins!

You can have tactics that result in devastation, but outright slugfests can get zzz'ing after awhile. That is why it is so much fun playing with mechs that have both strengths and weaknesses.

Seraph, does that opponent you speak of need a blanket and a soother?

I'm a huge believer in combined arms and as such I'm a big proponent of mixed mechs. I would like to believe that a lance of 5 well balanced mechs would lose to a lance of 5 specialized mechs whose specializations supported each other, but I lack the experience to make that call. Regardless tactics and even strategy (which is where the mission specific mechs come in to play) are what make the game fun for me ... not just blowing stuff up. Your average 3D shooter is better suited to carnage than battletech.
