I'm setting up my own Merc unit (i'm very bored) and just wondering what mechs some of you would suggest would make good merc unit mechs? Obviously taking into account cost, rarity and so forth, any wieght, prefereably a few of each but mostly heavies and mediums. Any suggestions?

Anything packing a lot of energy weapons would be a big help. As well as Streak SRM Launchers. Ammo will be a big hit on your bottom line. You'll still want some missile boats and ballistic weapons, but for a starting Merc unit, energy weapons and Medium to Heavy Mechs are the way to go.

Locusts are excellent mercenary 'mechs. Fast and easy to repair; also, they can usually get out of a tight situation with minimal damage.

I have to sgree on that one. Most small merc units should own at least one Locust. They are very versitle mechs. Especially for those lucrative hit and run missions.

I'm also a fan of Wasps and Stingers. Simple to use, and cheap to buy and repair. Hunchbacks are okay, but very dependant on AC20 ammo, but still good to have on guarding your CO. Catapults or Trebuchets are pretty good for fire support (or a Crusader for something a little more rounded).

Clan-tech is a good draw, but don't get sucked into buying any for a small unit starting out. It is prohibitively expensive, and hard to fix, allow very sexy in your TO&E.

Tough light mechs, like Jenners and Wolfhounds. General-purpose mediums with jump jets, such as the Phoenix Hawk and the Wolverine. Solid heavies like Thunderbolts and Warhammers.

Avoid anything too fancy, like XL engines. Endo steel is generally OK, as are DHS. Ferro-fibrous armor might be a problem, especially on the less developed planets of the IS. Before buying mechs with fancy electronics you should consider what it costs to keep spares for them.

And try to keep a short list of different ammo-dependent weapons. That way there are more units that can share ammo and need for fewer different replacement parts. For example, I try to limit my use of ballistic weapons to only the LB-10X (, sometimes AC20s) and Gauss Rifles.

All of them are either wide spread or still being produced.

The Javelin is the ML version and is a great hit/run mech.
The Whitworth is a great fire support mech with sufficent bite with its 3 ML backup.
The Dervish is my fav and is a truely versitile machine. I added the 7D do to its DHS but prefere the 6M myself.
The Gallowglas is a jumping heavy with a full ernergy loadout that offers plently of bit at low levels of tech.

All of these can jump, and only the Dervish has FF armor which can be stripped for standard. Also all of the ammo users use LRM 10s and Streaks. so ammo stores and cost can be held to a minimum.

just fyi replacing the 7D with a 6M alters the cost to 16,910,919 and BV to 3,838.

What tech level?
What is more important: money or firepower?
What are your pilots good at?

Well, i always base my stuff in 3067, its the most recent era in classic battletech and it also gives you access to everything in the previous TRO's

As for pilots well I haven't thought about that yet,

Especially for small merc units you should try to match mechs to your pilots.

What kind of jobs do the mercs usually take? Raids, assaults, extractions, anything?
I like to talor my mechs for the job at hand.
If Im looking at a grab-bag mission, id like a company.
Recon:
Thorn, Wolfhound, Phoenix Hawk, Trebuchet.
Battle:
Catapult, Crab, Gallowglass, Hellspawn.
Command:
Cyclops, Archer, Warhammer, Solitare.
Yeah, the command lance is pretty big, but I want something that can kill whatever the Recon lance can find, but the Battle lance cant handle.
