Yes, but those vehicles were specifically built to crack Mach one. Im guessing that your average Von Luckner designer never considered the sound barrier when he laid down the blueprints.

We are also talking about a game set a very long time in the future. If we are able to break the sound barrier on land now, then it stands to reason that in a land of giant robots, they would be able to do the same. That said, I still would not want to pilot one of those things in a race. Could you imagine drafting at mach 1? Leave that draft and you would hit the shock wave from the sound barrier and most likely get knocked around enough to lose control. I could see mach 1 drag strips.
Here is a question for you Vagabond. What kind of brakes to those speedsters of yours have? Do they have the reverse thrusters required for low g & vacuum racing? Sure they can go really really fast, but without any braking system they just become missiles with pilots. _________________ Festina Lente!

His racers don't have tires, maybe you should look at them on the Design Submissions forum.

Another thing to consider is the fact that on a low grav world with atmosphere that there would be less resistance from the atmosphere because of the low grav the atmosphere is less dense. So sea level air pressure there would be like equal to air pressure here at say 20,000 feet. So when the sound barrier is broken there is less disturbance because the air molecules are not as densely packed together. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

Which means drafting isnt as beneficial also, since the air resistance is minimal.

They'd still be useless in vacuum; hovercraft and VTOLs need air to function.

if you notice mud is clearly stated "on a 0.1g world WITH atmosphere."

Of course, the atmosphere would be very thin due to the fact that there isn't enough gravity to keep a high pressure atmosphere. Of course Seraph already noted this in another post...but here's my thoughts...
With a thinner air pressure you wont get the same acceleration and top speeds in the lower gravity as you would in that low gravity with a thick earth-like atmosphere would you? I'm saying this cause there wouldn't be as much mass of air to push for acceleration, so wouldn't the speed need to be completely recalculated by some kinda physics equation?

Not really...this is battletech, and physics don't really apply. Sure, in reality I doubt there are any planets out there with 0.1g and a thick atmosphere...hell, a craft moving as fast as Vegabond's pod racers would probably achieve enough velocity to break orbit before even reaching maximum speed with such weak gravity...not to mention, we are talking about an asteroid here...no planet could really have such a low gravity.

watch those speed bumps.
*as the racing commision has recovery shuttles standing by in low orbit.*
