I was rummaging through the shelves of the VIPS store, trying to find something good in their discount bin, and I foun and bought Nicholas Monsarrat "The Cruel Sea" by $3 (hardback, 450 pages, retail price $23)
I had been thinking of buying this book for a long time.. but now that I had the cash I couldn't find it anywhere.
there's nothing better than a good book, except for a cheap book _________________ Memento audare semper

I've made a few good finds in antiquaries, aka second-hand shops. The people specialized in used books and comics generally take higher prices, but if you really must get a certain book it might pay to ask. Of course, they're also the ones who look out for rare books and hold them for favorite customers.

I live about 12 miles (19 km) from the largest used bookstore in the US with over 3/4 of a million old books in stock. The place is unreal an old warehouse 4 storys tall with a basement. The staff uses walkie-talkies to communicate with each other when customer comes looking for a specific book.

Hey Motown, Every Heard Of Powells in Portland OR? They are about that size. They overgrew their 4 story building and had to edxpand the a building across the street. They have both used and new. The last time I was there I spent several hours just in amazement. Luckily I excaped with spending less that $100.

For those Bushwacker/Jayhawks out there, there's a new used book store in Olatha Kansas. It doesn't have 3/4 million books, but it has a pretty broad selection, and a huge bin/shelf out front for $1 books. My dad got Tom Clancy's "Every Man a Tiger" and whatever the special forces book (sword and shield, or something like that) off those racks in hardback.
And if someone can find me a copy of the 1986 TRO 3025 I'll pay mucho money and kiss you right on the lips (tongue, no tongue: your choice). Unless you're Derek, in which case I want my books back.

I already have too many old/rare books. I have some nice 100+ year old copies of Ivanhoe, Ancient Mariner, Last of the Mohicans and many more. My wife found them at a garage sale. A guy in town who was an avid reader died in the early 90s and his idiot family had about 100 boxes of books out in the front yard with a sign that said free. Unfortunately some of them are in less than sparkling shape.
