Ok, so how many times have you been asked which weapon you liked?
How about which one you didn't?
Think the Light Guass is a waste
Think the Mace is overkill
Think MRM's are pointless or small lasers to petty?
Speak now,
I personally dislike the Lvl 2 Clan Heavy lasers and most of the Level three stuff
Streak LRM's? Whats the point, thought they were indirect fire?

My afternoon was just made. (kidding)
Disliked weapons, well, I'm a purist, so I'm not fond of much after level 2 3050 stuff. Specialised ammunition has its purposes, but I only allow its use in specialised circumstances. (In practice I allow semi-guided LRMs and LB-X autocannons, and that's about it. Everything else I issue at my discression for specific missions and then revoke at the end of the mission).
My absolutely most hated weapon is the A/C 2. It's a plink gun, and its range isn't that good. I could stick three medlas and three heatsinks, do 4 times more damage (at half the range, of course, but who really engages at 24 hexes?) in the same space. Heck, 12 machineguns could fit in its place, do 12 times more damage at close range. I've chewed lights and mediums up with only 8 MGs.

Disliked weapons...
1. Heavy Gauss (changed their minds on their version of "physics")
2. X-pulse lasers (only invented because they needed to sell another book)
3. Heavy Lasers (see X-pulse lasers)
4. Specialized ammo of any kind (just because I am difficult and whiny)
5. NARC (I know it's not really a weapon, but it doesn't make any sense to me...seems like it should give a bonus on the "to hit" roll as well as on the "number of missiles" roll)
..I DO like the idea of MRMs...I just think that when they made the rules for a cheap, lightweight, inaccurate weapon, they should have gone more extreme on all fronts (cheaper, lighter, more inaccurate)

From what I have seen, I stay away from any of the stuff that came out after about the 3057 TRO.
And to answer the question about who engages at 24 hexes. I do. Just ask Seraph, in our last battle I was hitting him with an SRM-6 when he was at the maximum range. If I get good to hit numbers I will attempt shots at long range. I love getting crits on long shots.

SMall lasers, I think, have pretty much gone the way of the dodo. Er smalls and small pulse lasers may cost a bit more, but they perform a bit better than the originals.
I love the Heavy Lasers. When you think about it, theyre great for S-variant mechs or when youre going to face Inner Sphere troops, whos weapons generally work at closer ranges. Yeah the heat output is staggering, and the Die Roll Penalty is a bit of a problem, but Ill take them any day of the week.
Probably the most overlooked weapon would be the LB-2X. The range on that is amazing, and good for use against lighter mechs and recon elements. As they typically mount less armor, the LB-2X makes a great sniper weapon against them.
I can hear the arguments "They dont do enough damage", "Two points? Ill stick with LRMs, thanks". But its not meant to take down a mech with one shot, its meant to open up some holes in the armor, to give the LRMs a better chance to hit the crunchy bits inside. And a head hit is a head hit, even if it doesnt penetrate the armor, or destroy the head, its still something that the pilot has to deal with. One more hole in the armor.

I don't like most level 3 equipment.
Heavy lasers seem to be for people who whined about the weight and size of IS pulse lasers.
I love the family of AC/2's. They are greatly underestimated. One shot at extreme range got my Vulcan past a Dragon in a mountain pass. And if you get a lucky roll it doesn't matter the damage, a crit is a crit.
I don't like the MRM's or ELRM's
Don't like rockets.
I hate OS weapons period. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

So where'd the 23 hex comment come from?
Anyone that doesn't fire an energy weapon if they have a resolution and it doesn't heat them up is going to lose...and you'd better be firing that SRM when you're at 9 hexes because if you don't odds are you're getting smacked with fire that's at medium range?

If I have a lot of ammo I even fire ballistic and missile weapons at their longest ranges. Like when I have 48 rounds of gauss shots for 2 rifles (24 each) I'll fire at maximum range. The chance of getting that lucky hit much outweighs the consumption of ammo. The only time this isn't true is if I'm a merc with little cash.

I actually have no qualms at all about firing at any range that I can get a solution.
Weapons I dislike...
Anything that cannot be found on a 3050 mech or earlier, level 2 or less.
Don't like most special munitions..

I agree the light gauss is a waste. OS srm's are an even bigger waste. The HG has too many quirks to make it worthwhile. And the IS ER large laser is terribley inefficient.
