I'm not advocating this (well, not yet anyway)...but can anyone name a "mainstream" game (not including stuff like monopoly--I'm refering to this hobby) that's been around as long as Battletech that hasn't had a complete rewrite of its basic rules at least once?

Well this is tough ... be a little more clear what you mean by rules rewrite. I mean all games (including BT) have had revisions ... do you mean a game that hasn't changed it's resolution mechanics? (2d6 on some chart) ... I'm just curious because I can think of lots of games that haven't had much change in their core mechanics but have simply had additional things added in or revised.

Sure they aren't as old as BT but then when you make that a requirement I think D&D is the only game that's been around longer ...

I mean a total rewrite of the rules and game mechanisms...I doubt you'll find one that's been around 10 years (never mind the 20 that B'tech has) that hasn't gone thru a substantial rewrite at some point.

Well Fasa's other major system ... Shadowrun ... has used the same core mechanics since it's inception in 1989. But I tend to agree this is an exception not a rule and SR is an RPG not a wargame. Hell most companies can't last 10 years much less systems.

That said warhammer has been around a long time but I know nothing about it so it might not have changed since it was created ... I dunno.

Ten golden stars and a pyramid tin foil hat!

Warhammer FRPG is still on the first edition. Why mess with perfection? Besides, the company never had the money to spend on messing around with it.

As far as I am aware of Panzer Blitz is still being sold with the original rule set.

Well, until about a month ago I could have confidently said "Axis & Allies". However, Ha$bro just rereleased it, and since I haven't read through the rerelease I am not sure how much they changed. From conversations with folks, my impression is that they just added a couple more types of specialty units (marines in addition to infantry, light cruisers in addition to battleships....that kinda thing) but that the core rules were unchanged.

Does anyone out there have any real information about the new version of A&A?

I did not even know they came out with a new version. I have seen expansion packs from private companies but nothing official.

There are new A&A games, but from what I understand the basic A&A is the same. You might be thinking of A&A: Pacific or A&A: Europe, which do have significant changes to the rules in them. I own A&A Pacific, and its a little more complex than the standard A&A.
