I now realize that I am a complete idiot! How can someone like myself, who has been playing battletech for almost 20 years not know this? What I am getting at is :

"A (jump capable) unit can jump down any number of levels" -Randall

I honestly did not know this. I am racking my brain trying to remember at ANY game where this would come up. I've played on maps with hills up to 12 levels and it's never even come up as an issue. I've never seen a player try to jump his Urbie off a level 4 hill, etc.....

So am I an idiot or just a victim of circumstance?

You really want me to answer that?

Remember a few years ago when the Den Rats had that huge mountain map set upat Total? I jumped down the 22 levels with some 2-3-2 custom they had designed and layed a smackdown on the back of the mech we were supposed to destroy in the 3rd turn of a 2 slot (8 hour) scenario. The scenario was over in less than an hour.

They didn't know that rule either.

I too have used jumpjets to drop down levels to unleash a storm of destruction, however, I have always used the rule of 1 level is 1 hex. So, a 4-6-4 mech could only jump down 4 levels.

Is this not correct? Have I been depriving myself of chances for further glory and more often defeat?

Up is one level per jump jet, but you only need 1 jump jet to jump down any amount of levels.

I guess I never even thought about that. The only map I have even played on where that would be an issue is the ice arena in the Solaris system. That has a deep crevase that you could jump into. The only problem is, once you jump down, unless you have the required jumpjets to get out the mech is stuck. Not to mention that I do not like jumping into rubble. I always make my piloting rolls unless I do something line that. Then it is snake eyes everytime.

In the novels anyway, mechs with jump jets did not need the assistance of jump pack for high altitude drops. That only futher enforces the any number of levels down with only 1 jump jet.

Aaargghh!!! That only makes sense. Duh, gravity ( slams open palm on forehead). Years of playing and I never thought of this.

Thank God I joined this site or I would have continued on my own missing-opportunity way.

If you have the Reaches book for Solaris, theres a map in there thats a real bitch. Its the King Of the Hill arena, a couple of 'false' peaks that are about Lvl 5 and a main peak thats about Lvl 7 or 8.
Makes me wonder, if I jumped off the peak and onto another mech, would it be a DFA or Charge attack?

definite DFA, and use my custom rule that every 3 levels adds a .25 multiplier to the damage to both mechs See, the farther it falls the faster it is falling, the more kinetic energy on impact 12 level drop would be double damage.

I use that for jump jets too, I use their number of jump+starting terrain level. If a mech is on a level 6 hill, as 6 jump, and does a DFA on a unit in level 0 terrain its a 12 level drop, double damage.

That's a question that never came up in any game I played. Now that I think on it the reason is we seldom played any map with huge mountains on it. I'll have to try it sometime.

Yes, I remember playing on that board it was very kewl. I hadn't heard that story though....nice tactics! Although if I had designed an 8 hour scenerio and it was over in an hour I would be %$#@!!

We just took a few minutes to talk about the scenario and played it again using the rules as they thought they were...was a pretty cool scenario actually.

We had a Gunslinger that had a habit of jumping off stuff. It used it's 2 Jumpjets to land safely everytime...
