I knew a guy who had a great way for dealing with light hover craft like Savanah Masters. He kept a few mechs back that had heavy weapons, like PPCs and AC 20s. When a hover got too close, he would just target the hex and deal enough damage to it to crater the hex, and watch the hover drop into the hole and explode.
Caught all of us off guard the first time he did it, but we couldnt deny its effectiveness.

The problem is that nothing short of NAVAL grade ordinance is capable of making craters large enough to effect the movement of a hovercraft through that hex and If I was playing that vehicle force in no way would I have tolerated such a clear violation of the rules. You cannot make craters that size with standard Battetech weaponry.

This was an opportunity that we could not pass up. It took us 10 hours to complete this battle. The longest part was moving 16 counters every round. The firing modifiers was a little hard to keep track of as well. With all those hovercraft flying around everywhere it was difficult to figure out what was going on half the time.

I think one of my favorite parts is when the J Edgar went zipping past the ARcher to turn around in a small clearing in the heavy woods. The next round I was able to step the Archer in the way so that it could not escape. Slowly I was able to get some lucky hits and finally get rid of the durn thing.

I thought there was a rule in one of the books, I want to say Tactical Handbook, that stated if 40 points of damage were dealt to the HEX, then the hex was considered cratered, and became a level -1 hole.
Or somesuch.
I dont have the rules in front of me, I do recall that they are available, and that the were used by agreement of all players present.

I seem to remember something about that. The hex turns into a rubble hex which would then cause problems for a hover craft I would think. I do not remember craters, just rubble.

Owning the Tactical hand Book,Maximum Tech, and the BattleTech Master rules .I have determined that you are Partially correct the Tactical Handbook does say you can do cratering damage to a hex with 40 points of damage .But the only prohibited units are Wheeled and Naval Hovercraft are unaffected other units have to expend one additional movement point.

A very nice scenario... if one does not get any re-enforcements it is a better one IMHO

That extra movement point could really help slow those suckers down though. 1 less hex can mean the difference between a +3 and a +4 modifier.

Without the reinforcements, I would not have had much of a chance of winning this one. By the time they arrived I had lost 2 mechs and the 2 that were left had significant damage. To win this scenario would take a larger tonnage limit for the mech forces. An entrenched vehicle unit is very hard to get rid of without artillery support.

Vehicles are brutal I ran a couple of mech versus vehicle battles. IS vehicles versus Clan mechs. I ran the vehicles the first time and won then the mech forces the second time and lost.

They can be even more brutal when playing double blind rules. Much smaller and harder to find. Easier to setup ambushes with them. Fear the Hetzer ambush.

I mentioned once in the past that I taught my cousin to play, and he plays exclusively with vehicles. Always hands me my head too. Vehicles look fragile on paper, and are to a certain extent. But they can mount a lot of firepower, in some cases more than 'Mechs, and use it with impunity. Plus the little ones are hard to tag. I hate Savannah Masters.

Or for that matter the lance of Demolisher IIs ambush, especially when the highest gunnery skill they have is 3 God that hurt. (just happened in a scenario I played last night. They hid behind a level 1 hill, I walked onto the top and got my head handed to me. My brand new Turkina B did not survive

Those Demolishers are evil too. I like the Hetzers just for the humilation factor. They are such weak vehicles with a huge gun they get laughed at until you walk into their ambush. Plus they are cheap. Put several in an alley and you can take out a mech in one round of firing. Fun stuff.
