With the spread of Omni Technology around the Inner Sphere, one company has decided to build cheep versitle designs that purchasors can outfit themselves for the roll they desire. Running an average of 500,000 over comparible standard designs the Units are not only affordable but also are easier to maintain. This company is releasing initial production units out into the open market, and already has plans to out scource with other producers to meet projected demand.

I noticed that all of the Omni bases were using Standard engines. Wouldnt it be a good idea to produce Light engined and XL engined versions that have higher rates of speed with comparable Armor/Pod space?

cost.

please not the entry of low cost and affordable.

using either a light or XL will nearly double the base cost. much to much expensive for my purposes of proposing the designs.

well I understand that, but every company is gonna wan to make "higher levels" of whatever they make, otherwise we woudl all drive around in cars that all cost very little, a High line, standard line, and then your deluxe line. In order to give you a higher demographic of prospective buyers, and therefore a higher profit margin in the end.

So your Std engined versions would be your Standard model, You would then have a "highline" that is produced in slightly fewer numbers, incorporates light engines to allow a higher payload. And finally your Deluxe models, which would be produced in more limited numbers, that have a rougly equal payload as the highline or standard but surpass them in speed.

maybe so in RL economics and maybe even BT civilian cars, but not in BT mech development.

these mechs market to corperations, mercenaries, and smaller nations were the budget mark cannot afford the cost, let alone the possibility of loss, of a unit without standard engines.

like in WW2, the US could easily have developed and deployed more advanced tanks with bigger guns and thicker armor. they chose not to do to cost which gave them the ability to deploy larger numbers. a calculated risk that has proven itself time and again in the BT universe.

anyway, in order to produce those variant this company would need additional lines and materials that it may not be able to afford. in addition, the cost of further development in order to place an XL or Light engine on a chassie designed for a standard would be costly.

but the bottom line is this. they were not designed to be advanced peices of equipment mounting expensive equipment. they are designed as a modular chassie that the purchaser can equip as they see fit. with mercenaries and house militias as there primary target group.

now, i am not saying your idea dosen't have merit and shouldn't be used, but it was not the goal of these designs and therefore is irrelevent to these designs.

Well, if you ever decide to make advanced engines available, just develop a new chassis first. It's probably easy to make sure a new chassis can carry any type of engine once you know it's needed. After all it's only your own idea taken a bit farther.
