Here is match up not often considered, the Guillotine GLT-4L vs. the Grasshopper GHR-5H. Both are jumping heavies with some advantages and definite weaknesses. The Grasshopper, although better armored, has a lower BV rating than the Guillotine. Both are jump capable with equal speeds.

In open terrain, which do you think would have the advantage (both pilots being of equal skill)? Some of you will say they are too evenly matched in this terrain. Will you change your opinion if the fight is taken into a city?

I personally favor the Guillotine in both scenarios.

This is a good one, I however have always fared better with the grasshopper, just me probably though.

I the Grasshoper can keep it's distance, then there is a fighting chance...
However if the Guillotine can close the gap, then the 'hoper loses it's head.

Man do i respect your choices. Love to play against you sometime. You look at the game in the big whole and do not concentrate on the favorite mechs.

As for this battle, The Head Chopper. Little Insect would have a little bit of range but if I remember correctly tge Guillotine has a good ton or more armor.

AWAD- The Guillotine is an all time fav, seem to cause mayhem and death with that mech

Actually, the Guillotine loses a ton of armor to make up for the weight difference of its SRM-6 versus the Grasshopper-5H's LRM-5...

My money is personally on the Grasshopper, I believe...the LRM's aren't much, but they allow hits at a range the Guillotine can't touch, it's got slightly more armor, and then when things get physical, the 'Hopper has two hands making those punches killers...especially with its center torso (vs. arm) mounted LL still being a factor...

I agree with Ruger...once the armor starts melting fast, the Guillotine will lose more firepower from it's lost arms than the Grasshopper will. And the lower amount of armor means it might happen sooner.

I haven't fought these two against each other, but recently saw them in action on the same side. The Grasshopper can win, as long as you keep the range at first. Going close to a mint Guillotine is a recipe for disaster with the SRM-6 as spice. Firepower is king if you can hit.

The Grasshopper also has a design flaw that could hurt it once the mechs start taking damage. Jump jets in the legs instead of heat sinks. Means you can't jump out of level 1 water hexes, and there's no additional heat dissipation for standing there in the first place.

The Guillotine isn't exactly perfect there either, but at least it's got one HS and one JJ in each leg.

My verdict: The Grasshopper wins a contest of endurance, the Guillotine wins a brutal head-on fight.

Personally, I think it's essentially a coin-toss between these two 'mechs. They're essentially the same design, have the same movement, armament, and protection. The only real difference is in the missile systems, not something I think will be a huge factor.

I agree with Nightmare. I like the Guillotine better, personally.

The two mechs are very close, and I would only choose the Guillotine because I believe an SRM6 much more effective than the Hopper's LRM.

(Oddly the Hopper is one of my favorite mechs)

Not so odd really...when you see a 3025 'mechs with 22 heat sinks, good weapons, a ton of armor, and jumping ability...well, it's hard not to like the Hopper.

I would go with the Grasshopper simply because its an old favorite of mine, I know what its capable of. Such a venerable workhorse, i like to think of it as the heavy version of the Enforcer or Panther. I have never had as much success with the Guillotine.

In ancient times, that is the 80s for a lot of you who were not born, and prime years for others, one of the Btech Fanzines did a little poll and number crunch. Of course some of you have to realize, this is when 3025, and 3026 were the only TRs. Grasshopper was the #2 most surviable mech in terms of walking off the field or piloting living. Ad many a player yanked the LRM-5. Then the first laser boat of doom was born. Of course then it did not have the cool Grasshopper look without the holes in the head.

AWAD- but its hands where so limped wristed in the picture

I would have to go with the Hopper in the open terrain. In the city the fight would really be a coin toss with whoever wins the most init or gets the first lucky crit winning.
