Due to popular success of the last 3-way match up and the resulting discussions, I have another for this week. Although the weight class is Medium again, these mechs move like Lights. I find that these mechs are forgotten or not used as often as they should be. So, here is the match up:
Assassin ASN-21
Cicada CDA-3C
Hermes II HER-2M
Each of these mechs have distinct vulnerabilities, but also have some advantages over their opponents. The Assassin with its jump jets and decent weapon configuration; the Cicada with its hard hitting PPC, but weak armor; and the Hermes 2 with its speed and close-in energy weapons.
Which mech do you think will triumph in an open terrain battle with some hills and stands of heavy woods? If the fight was brought into the city, would you change your choice? And lastly, which is your favorite (if any)?

I picked the Assassin because it has the jumpjets to be, as I think it was Vampire that put it, a "bouncing backstabbing bastard." The weapons load isn't much, and the armor is thin, so it will take a skilled pilot to handle this machine properly. Only for those who enjoy the thrill of knife fighting!
In the city, the jets will be an advantage, as it can move far without worrying about skidding like the other two designs.
It has thicker armor than the Cicada (not by much) but is a little slower on the ground. Again, the jumpjets are good for balancing things out here. The Heremes has thicker armor, but is slower on the ground, and also lacks jumpjets.
Overall, I think the Assassin has this one as long as he keeps moving to his fullest and stickes to cover.

The Cicada wins if he gets some good hits at range, and makes a point of staying out of the fray. The Hermes does more damage overall, and if either the Assassin or Cicada get into his kill zone he should be able to gun them down. The Assassin is the worst of the three. The LRM-5 is not particularly useful; the Cicada's PPC will bring the Assassin down in a long range duel, and the Hermes superior armor can take a few LRM-5 hits with no problem. The Jump Jets could make the difference, but the Assassin's only real chance is to win on a backshot. Most times, either the Cicada or Hermes II takes the gold.

any mech with a PPC is dangerous...specially if it's going against lights. I'm going with the Cicada.

Mobility through all terrain win win the fight.
The Assassin.
