ya know, and now that I realize it, if they would just all stand still and shoot at once, they'd have no problem at all. And why is Rico the only one with the shotgun?

Probably for the same reason that shotguns aren't too common in today's armed forces and used mainly by police SWAT:
1. Low ammo loads. Assault rifles can easily carry two or almost three times the amount of rounds of the average pump shotgun (according to the last set of stats I saw.)
2. Some sort of action (chambering of the round) must be performed manually after each shell is fired. On an assault rifle, you only have ot change the clip ir maybe the rate of fire.
3. Range. Assault Rifles tend to have longer ranges than shotguns. Shotguns are more suited to up-close areas like urban situations.
(I could be wrong, tho.)

the movie is set in like 2050 and their fighting in another planet. The assault rifles they carry (rico included) have the assault rifle ammo built right into them i guess, and i elieve all of them have a little pump-action shotgun system included in the gun, but rico is the only one who uses it. One bug tries to jump on him and he caps it, but this happens to like 50 other people and they dont do a thing.
