This weekend, Oafman and I managed to get some warfare in. We played 5 different match-ups with Oafman winning the first 4 and a draw occuring on the fifth match.
First up I piloted the DV-6M Dervish(3025) against a BJ-2 Blackjack(3050). Was fun. The Dervish's missle load out seems to be significant but it's lack on consistant damages was a slight hindrance. I was getting pounded but I may have come back but for gross stupidity on my part. I got carried away and tried a DFA on the Blackjack. Yes, Oafman laughed at me too. I missed and the damange sustained pretty much hurt me more than I could handle and I went down quiclky after that. Oafman 1, Seraph 0.
Next round I was piloting the Blackjack and Oafman had the Dervish. It was going pretty much as the first round did. The Blackjack with it's twin ER large lasers as primary weapons was doing consistant damage spreads and was beating the inconsistant damage spreads of the Dervish's missles. However, the BJ-2 is a hot running mech and you really have to keep control of yourself to avoid excessive heat. I almost won that one but in a last ditch effort Oafman blew my leg off and the damage I sustained in the fall left one arm mounted weapon operational. He could easily have moved out of my firing arc and finished me but he offered to let me surrender. I did. Oafman 2, Seraph 0.
Next We tried the AWS-8Q Awesome against the CGR-SB Charger. I piloted the Awesome and OAfman had the Charger. The Charger has a higher damage potential and more armor, but a significantly higher heat spike after a full tab. (I use the "tab" instead of alpha strike as I was introduced to Btech by the original MechWarrior comp game.) There was a lake and we both made a bee-line towards it to get better heat dissapation. We spent two rounds firing at each other while waist deep in water. I was missing more and was getting my arse handed to me when I got a few PPC's to hit. He then went into level 2 water and proceded to take potshots at my legs hoping for an armor breach. I said what the heck and went under as well. My luck with weapons fire went downhill and I ended up getting breaches in my LA,RA,RT,CT,LL, and LT. Oafman 3, Seraph 0.
So we decided that wasn't really that fun so we went for a drier map. I stayed put trying to utilize my longer ranges to get better rolls while he closed. It worked a little but the Charger's better armor proved my downfall, again. After pummeling each other we were in pretty bad shape. However after about 4-6 turns of rather close in weapons fire, Oafman cored me with a nice large laser shot to my CT. Oafman 4, Seraph 0.
Fianl battle pitted me in the HGN-733 Highlander versus Oafman in the BNC-3S Banshee. Highlander can jump and has a couple tons more armor. Banshee has the advantage in weapons. This one also degenerated into a slugging match, though these two can survive much harsher damages than the previous two. I discovered early on that if you can't jump far enough you get a worse to hit modifier than your opponent. SO my jumping advantage wasn't as big a factor as I had hoped. However it did help me get places when my heat was kicking up there. Both mechs are ovens, well okay they aren't ovens so much as blast furnaces. We were both in pretty bads shape as I was playing hop-scotch around some heavy woods when I failed a piloting roll to land in heavy woods and came crashing down. Oafman used his chance to close with me and hand me some hard damage. A few turns later we were both more holes that solid and he gave me a full tab in an attempt to wipe me out beofre I could finish him. It worked wonders. He got several crits into my CT and took out my JJ, 1 gyro hit and 3 engine hits. However he did like 41 heat and couldn't sink but 20. Added to previous heat he managed to avoid shutdown but all his ammo exploded.
Oafman 4-0-1, Seraph 0-4-1.
All in all it was great fun and I don't mind losing when I've had fun doing it. Hopefully we can get another chance soon to go at it again. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

Sounds like fun, once me and my friend played a 8 on 8 slug match using the back of one of the map sheets,so the level was blank!
It was very good, I ended up winning because his last mech was a Cicada and he ran all over the place, i managed the to-hit modifier (12) and rolled a 12 to hit his head! That was a hotshot pilot!
So in these one on ones, had any interesting combintions, the best i've done is take down an Atlas with a Locust, it took HOURS, and it happened because the Atlas failed a piloting roll in the first turn, and couldn,t get up! He he
So was a fluke, but battletech is about luck!

In general, rules I try to live by..
1) Death from Above attacks rarely work, and while looking flashy they usually cause much more damage to the attacker.
2) If someone is in level 2 water with lasers before I can get there, get out of the water.. They will rip your legs apart on the way in.
This goes right along with
3) If your opponent seems to be leading you to make a certain move, then avoid it by all means.
4) LRMs spread the damage too much to be nearly as effective as alot of people think.
5) Hot mechs need judicial application of planning. Never run the mech thinking of just this turn, always think at least two turns ahead, and where your opponent will be then.
6) Every play strategy you know is pretty much useless until you get a feel for your opponent.
edited cause I forgot the most important rule::
7) Have fun. I started having the people at my tables at Total Con vote for the player that they enjoyed playing with the most, not the best tactician, or the best rules person, but the person who did something that was flashy or that they would like to play with again.
Oddly, Scott won the table that year for picking up a crate of AC20 ammo and ALMOST making it off the board. The resounding boom and two legs left standing after someone hit the ammo and exploded it were actually kind of funny.

Well, I had a big response to this, but my stupid computer went and logged me out fromt he site in the middle of typing, so my 5-6 minutes of work just up and dissapeared.
So here is the short version. In our private battles we were Seraph 3 Oafman 1 going into this series. this now puts us at Seraph 3-1 and Oafman 5-1. Which means of course that the next time we play he will most likely wipe the map with me.
It can be a lot of fun to play some one that thinks the same way you do. On one hand it has not taken me very long to get used to his playing style because it is so close to mine. On the other hand it can be very challenging because both of us do the unexpected at random points in the game so... There have been a few times when moves come out of left field but then others where it seems like the other player is reading our minds.

Sounds like a good time was had by all. I guess you didn't get a chance to play the T-bolt and Marauder vs. the Warhammer and Orion. Maybe next time.

We were playing the smaller ones because ther was supposed to be a 3rd player showing up, bur he never did. We did not want to get stuck in the middle of a longer fight if he showed up. Possibly the next time we play we will get to that one.

I typically only DFA when my Pheonix Hawk gets both arms destroyed.

I successfully hit with a DFA with an UrbanMech. The Victor laughed at me then legged me with his AC/20 next round. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

DFA should be made much more devastating, even a Locust would cause imense damge to an Atlas if it landed on its head, your putting 20tons on two pressure points (the legs) that is guna cause some damage,
I perform the Highander burial quite often, as it seems to work and the damage taken is superficial. I felt sorry for the Commando that my friend had just bought, two brandspanking new mechs, a Commando and a Centurion. Both got the treatment and both were completley wasted!

to hit with a DFA you need what?
a 5 base + your movement (3) + your target's modifiers + terrain? (I don't even think that pilot skill differences are in this equation are they?)
If your target didn't move, you have a decent chance of hitting him, otherwise, your chances fall off incredibly quickly, and no matter what you do, you take a level 2 fall.
I can think of much less painful ways of killing opponents.
Only time I ever use DFA is when I have no other choice.

My death from above attacks are usually last ditch efforts. Charging however can be fun in a pinch, but pushing can be more effective sometimes. (learned that from Seraph. He like the domino effect with mechs.)
