Okay, with all the various forms of artillery in the game, just how prolific is it? What is your favorite kind, and just how often have you used it against anyone? And more importantly, is it truly effective or is it just a waste of time and space?

Long Tom... Usually in Campaign I'm so short on ammo I use the threat that I *might* fire it to force retreats my chances to get better salvage. (well I do fire it just only once or twice instead of a steel rain effect)
I use it about every 2nd campaign... the stuff is useful but kinda pricey. Especially if you get a vehicle/mech that moves fast. If you go with the cut rate ICE Engine 2/3, paper thin armour vehicle model you can squeeze them in better. but they're kind of vulnerable to attacks because even assault mechs can over run them. Hell... an URBANMECH is fast enough to keep them in range and kill them.

Which is why my Long Tom lance is escorted by an UrbanMech lance reinforced with a company of grunts. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

I preferred the Long Toms over all other types. But Ralgith has shown me that the Arrow IV system is pretty nasty as well. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

I have a battery of four Thors that I use fairly often. They are far enough back from the battle that I don't normally have to worry about them. I also have a battery of four towed Thumpers that I use. I try not to deploy them against a 'Mech heavy enemy, (due to the fact that they are quite vulnerable).
I like to use Arty against defensive positions, or to deny routes in close country. Drop a few rounds of arty into a pass, and the enemy will probably try to go around.

I haven't really tried artillery except in the form of Arrow IVs carried under fighters. The homing version is great fun when you have a TAG-equipped unit on the battlefield.

I have used the Arrows system a few times and in a few games deployed Long Toms and Thumpers. I have , however, been on the receiving end more times than I would like to mention, so I have a healthy respect/disdain for these "bringers of death and destructions".

I rarely ever bother with it, just because I don't usually play btech at a scale large enough to make the stuff worthwhile.

I built a hover Long Tom carrier once. It actually would have worked pretty nicely. I think it pulled at least 6/9.
I like the idea of using artillery to cover salvage operations and harrass other's salvagers.

I'm a big fan of both Logn Tom and Arrow IV Artillery. I'll use 'em whenever I get the chance.

I voted "used it once or twice" on the condition that it is understood as "per month," with a usual campaign meeting once a week.
I don't let my players have it in their personal possession, neither have any GMs I've played with. It's something that the Higher Echelon's have access to and is assigned to the players as they determine the players will need it.
In a particularly large engagement the players might be authorized to call in as many as 5 artillery strikes. The shells will land until they are succussfully zeroed, and then they will fall for another 3 turns.
As the GM, I use artillery pretty much the same way for the bad guys. Whatever is available is what is used, Long Tom, Sniper, Thumper, or Arrow IV.
As a player though, I have to be of the Marine Corps school. Artillery-smillery. Just give me some good close-air support.

Well as a player and GM that uses everything, I have used it. But I said never touched it since I can name the 3 times I used it. Most of the time it is more of a target thing. The rules and basis of the game do not help artillery.
AWAD- so are field guns considered artillery?

If I can get it I prefer Arrow IV missiles to regular artillery. A lot more accurate, although you need a faster platform because of the reduced range.
