This lance is a mobile special forces (re: mobile fire support and rear-of-line operations) unit.
Criteria:
1. The design must be Davion or available to all Houses.
2. The newest the design can be is 3055.
3. It must have jump jets.
4. The bulk of its weapons must be energy-based, or it must be easy to modify it to where that is.
5. It must be a light mech (the pilot for this only has a vehicle trait of 2).
6. It must have a decent amount of critical space open as all mechs in the lance will be altered to have a Light Engine (I have a perfectly sound way to fluff it off).
Lance:
1. The lance commander has a heavily modified 3025 Grasshopper. It has a TComp, Angel ECM, Bloodhound Probe, and enough firepower to kill a 40-tonner in one volley.
2. The second in command has a heavily modified 3025 Javelin. The missiles have been replaced with a laser array (I doubt anyone's going to expect that large laser.....)
3. The third guy in the lance has a modified 3025 Valkyrie. The LRM rack has been broken up into 2 LRM 5s, there's now a CASE system, an ECM system, ferro armor, and a second medium laser.

The fourth guy in the lance only has a high enough trait in Vehicle to warrant a light mech and I can't justify him having anything heavier than a medium. The only reason why the lance commander has his Grasshopper is because I got an event roll which said he inherited it.

Don't rely on random rolls to set up a campaign, it doesn't allow you any manuevering room.

if you go with a Jenner go with the JR-7F much better armour no ammo to blow up and the 7D does not have the heatsinks to fire all its weapons anyways so there is no advantage to having the SRM quad .

Try the WSP-1W Wasp or the WSP-3W Wasp. Both are light mechs with jumpjets and all energy weapons. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

I prefer the 7F over the 7D, but he did say he wanted Davion mechs...although the 7F should be available to everyone.

When rolling up the characters, the lance leader got an event roll which said that he inherited a mech from a family member. That, coupled with the additional mech traits, gave him a high enough trait value to justify a heavy.
For everyone else in the lance, they only have a mech trait high enough to justify a light mech.

The Jenner is a good choice. It's predictable since it's such a good mech, but a good choice anyway.
Give him an UrbanMech just for fun.

Locust-E. All energy weapons. Hard to kill, because of it's speed.
You could also use a Firestarter. The M.G.s are essentially energy weapons...it's pretty hard to run out of ammo.
A Panther also fits the bill. It would make a nice backup for that Grasshopper.

How would I justify a DCMS mech in a AAFC lance? I'm already using the "stolen technology" bit with the Light Engines (except for the Javelin pilot, the three guys are MI).

Well, considering you will probably want to modify it to get rid of the SRM launchers, just say that the Panther was captured in battle from Kurita. It had naturally taken battle damage, and as Davion didn't have the necessary parts to rebuild the 'mech to Kurita specs, they did some tinkering.
Oh, and who knows. Maybe the 'mech's old pilot is still out there somewhere and really really wants his Panther back. One nice ready-made antagonist ready to go _________________ "The enemy's gate is down."

I'm going with a modified Watchman. As a part of the fluff, the Watchman was designed to be a trainer mech.
After graduating from the NAIS military academy, the guy was re-assigned duty on New Avalon for two years, where he wound up piloting a desk more often than a mech (I have a TOD: Desk Jockey homebrew path if anyone'd like to see it). He got the event roll which gave him the mech (well, it had been written off as a destroyed unit.....) even though as a part of it the mech has the Lemon trait. He got assigned to the special forces lance that everyone else is in, and as a part of that re-assignment the mech was not only rebuilt but modified (by going for the light and going to 10 DHS, I traded out the Large for a PPC and added TSM and two more mediums).
