1. Golden Archery

While on patrol, the party hears a radio distress call from a soldier who says that his vehicle has broken down, he's surrounded by (rebel) infantry [green], he can't guarantee how long his ammo will hold out, and he has some stuff he needs to get back to his unit. The jeep he's in is in the middle of the map sheet; all the players have to do is recover the guy and a pair of large boxes that he has with him. However, if this takes the party more than 12 rounds to do, the rebels will be able to field an L1 Archer [regular]. I think you all can guess what's in those boxes.

2. Droning on and on.....
After landing and deploying its drones, a Karnov suffers mechanical problems which leaves it stuck; the party must now escort a recovery crew to pick up the vehicle. Thing is, the drones say that someone else is coming to pick the Karnov up, too.

Chinese food? The soldier was sent to get Chinese take out for his unit, when lo and behold, he's ambushed by a group of pizza delivery guys on a mission to rid the planet of any non-round shaped foods.

Perhaps some LRM ammo?

I like the food idea myself. but I think the mission plan itself sounds good.

The main thing is the pucker factor. The characters are going to risk life and limb just because a couple people wanted some Big Macs.

You know, you'd think infantry would be really easy for the mechwarriors to take down...

On my own game, the players were on patrol near an abandoned armory and they are supposed to scope it out to see if the rebels have taken control of it.

Of course, the rebels have, and there are 80 men (reduced rifle platoons) running around working the static defenses, et cetera.

The mechs, a Phoenix Hawk and a Shadow Hawk, approach the base. AC 5's and LRM 5's fire, but hit nothing. The jeeps in the base fire, but hit nothing. The air element for the unit blows open the gate, and the phoenix hawk wades into the armory.

The static defenses have hit absolutely nothing.

In two shots, the Jeeds are smoldering wrecks.

Then the infantry fire. Hit. Head. Twice.

One more head hit, and Gabe would have been quite dead. And this was the first mission, too.

Never underestimate the power of infantry... In the right terrain. Even simple field works can extend the lifespan of the poor PBI.

As for damage, even a platoon of rifle infantry can inflict light damage before going down if they can hit with surprise.

Like I said; the party has 12 rounds to get to the guy, and get him and his boxes to their edge of the map before a regular pilot in an L1 Archer appears from the other side of the map.

By "party" what are you refering to?

Are they infantry? Is it a lance.

If it's a lance of anything combat worthy that Archer is probabaly gunna be slag anyway...

Never ever EVER. Underestimate infantry, especially the SRM and Inferno types.

I was playing a campaign (on of the few i play not as the GM) and as me lance (consisting of a commando, catapault, enforcer and spider) were travelling through the middle of a large forest (made of 4 mapsheets with one track through the centre) 6 platoons of SRM troopers ambushed them, bit of a shock because my spider was a custom mounting a BAP (was expecting mechs, stupid me!) But the platoons caused alot of damage, especially the two inferno teams.
My cata fired one alpha, missed with everything and then was hit with alot of infernoes. After two turns of infernoes the ammo went critical. The spider was taken down too with the Enforcer and commando taking light and heavy damage respectivley.

The most frustrating thing was they can be such gits to hit sometimes! most of my rolls were 3's and 4's (we play a custom rule where ambushed mechs have to take 2 from their roles to indicate suprise!)

Compared to me, the rest of the players are green. Not only that, but only one of the players even has BTech experience and even then it was very limited. I'm trying to design missions for these guys so that they'll be challenging without being too overly hard for them.

I'm not joking around when I say that if you add up the sum total gaming experience of the other guys in the group, it's only about half of the experience that Ronin or myself have.

And if you add your's and Ronin's together it wouldn't be half of mine

(EDIT: And I'd bet Mo got me beat)

That's the whole point.

Don't rely on your player's inexperience to help you figure out what they are going to do...

They decide to attack that Archer (which is something their characters would know is a good idea) you'll need a back up plan.

Knowing these guys, if one of them has a mech with hands they're just going to pick the vehicle up and try and walk off with it.
