I've got a question for those who paint their own minis.
Earlier this afternoon I tried to do an "ink wash" using some black acrylic paint (Testor's) thinned out with water (I have no idea what the ratio was). When I tried to apply it to a mini that had two layers of white acrylic paint (Testor's) on it, when I went to wipe the excess wash off some of the white paint came with it. When I tried to apply it to a mini with white enamel on it (Testor's), the wash refused to stick.
What did I do wrong? Should I have done the wash first and then tried to paint?

I personally don't use INKS. I prime, then paint base color and let dry for at least 6 hours.
I then use a darker shade of that color (or same color mixed with darker brown or black) and then thin that out with water. I just eyeball the the ratio using enough water to make it run into the crevaces. If it's too light initially I just do it again. DO NOT wipe any excess away! Let it dry naturally for about a day.
When that is very very dry, you can highlight the high spots using a drybrush method. lighten the base color with white or other neutral lighter tone of the original base paint. Then wipe of most of the paint of the brush by dapping paper towel or tissue. lightly brush the raised spots of the mini to bring out the highlights.
Add painted details and/or decals...voila!
I use only acrylic paints never enamal.
"Bombtech" would be the best resource for using inks. His minis rock. YOu should be able to get his info here somewhere.

Thing is, I only had this afternoon to get it all done; I have several animals including a cat (it's Ronin's little girl) that likes to get into everything, so just letting something sit around for an extended period unattended isn't an option. I took a heck of a risk even mixing up the wash in the first place.

Got a room or someplace like a cupboard you can put them? If nothing else, put em on the outside of your window or something. This, of course, assumes you have a window where something like a mini can be safely set without it falling off, being stolen, or subjected to extreme weather.

I am not sure on the make up of testors paints but I do know the same sort of thing happens with citadel inks against humbrol paints. My advice would be to switch to acrylic paints throughout. The citadel range are excellent. Stupid names but really good paints. Also Tamiya acrylics have a huge military range suitable for this type of model. You can mix and match these brands too, My son has done this with excellent results. Always undercoat with an approproate colour primer. I personally use automative primers. They are in large tins, cheap, and have superb coverage. Over here in the UK the brand is Halfords. I know in the States there are similar companies but offhand cant recall their names. leave about 2 days between all coats too. This allows the paint to dry and harden properly. Hope this helps _________________ "Thats the fastest race ever ran. But not as fast as the world record".

If time is of the essence, go with the "slop and go" method. No washes, just prime/paint the entire figure black. Let dry, then heavily drybrush the figure in base color (don't get any into the cracks/crevaces. Lastly highlight with even lighter shade lightly on raised surfaces. This process gives you the same 3-d effect without such long drying times.
I've done this method for fantasy figs/armies to do lots in a short amount of time.
Put small pools of super glue around your work station....that should solve the cat problem.
Hint, use a stron lamp to paint by and put your minis under it to speed up drying time.

My work station is the dining room table.

I feel for you. I have 3 cats, 2 dogs and an infant to worry about. I use my computer table. I keep my paints and glues in a plastic container that seals. I have another container(coffe can) that I use to let my mechs cure til I can get bnack to them. Just poke some holes in the lid and set it out of the way or in a cupboard/cabinet. The smell coming out of it will assure the cats will leave it alone and leaving it up high will help keep only the cats able to get at it. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

Well if you can't commit to super-gluing you cat to keep you minis safe, then I can't help you!
Seriously though, distract the cat with some catnip sprinkled generously outside the room you're working in. Or get a cardboard box with a cover from the local supermarket (banana boxes work well) to put either the cat or you minis in while they dry.

The slop and go method mentioned earlier is actually a good system and will produce some excellent paint finishes if you are careful. As for drying times if you were to use acrylics for the job this will become an irrelevance as they are dry to the touch in minutes and hard enough to work with in about an hour _________________ "Thats the fastest race ever ran. With 'mechs, I often find the best thing to do is to put on a coat of black primer, and then dry brush over it. That eliminates the need for a black wash altogether, as if you do the dry coat right you will cover the raised parts and leave the recessed areas black. That might not work so well with a mini you're trying to paint white though.
Have you thought about using a gray wash instead of black? It would work better with a white paint scheme. _________________ "The enemy's gate is down."

All i have to work with is Enamel paints. They are really frustrating, they paint on well as an undercoat and for adding details. But they do not mix with water to make a wash orbrush lightly to create highlights. They tend to stick to the brush if used in very small amounts. They also take ages to dry properly. I've gone back to a model after four hours to apply the next layer and its completely smudged. So the insignia came out as a dark yellow blob with a mix of green where the camo had smudged as well. It completely wrecked the Atlas, it was looking great up to that point.
I was giving it a dark green camo with the old white-gray deaths head style like MW4.

Try using paint thinner rather than water. You may get better results if you're stuck with enamels. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?
