|
|
This question goes out to those designers who designed 5+ designs a month by pen n paper or did so prior to using a computer program for speed.
do you find that your math skills are above the norm?
do you find you math skills increased because of this approach?
did you find yourself quickly running tabulations in your head for common multiplication or division problems or did you NEED a calculator?
my answer: yes, yes, in my head.
I'd like to hear anything you have to say on this subject. it struck me as an interesting thought.

Before I got my HM programs I probably designed about 40+ mechs Over a dozen vehicles about half a dozen fighters 4 warships a jumpship and 4 dropships by hand I have average math skills and was dependent on a calculator

Math SKill????
you're kidding right?
I use the Drawing Board.
I think of a concept and test it out to see if it works out...
most times i end up compromising..

Yes, yes, In my head.
I actually have 2 or 3 notebooks filled with designes for Mechs, vehicles, warships. I moved to HMPro because of speed and a permenence to the designs but that was because one of my books was ruined by my kids.

Back in high school, I would do this stuff with pencil and paper; when I got done with my homework, I'd fire up The Drawing Board to check my math.
It got to the point to where I had the basic formulas (such as armor per ton) in my head; I also transcribed the internal structure table, so I would also calculate mentally how much armor a unit could also have. I also figured out a shortcut formula (vehicle XL engine = weight of fusion engine * .75) as well.
Thing is, that was as far as it got.
Nowadays when I do vehicle designs, it's as a warm-up activity to get my brain going so that I can do other projects.

Who needs a prog to do designs anyway?
I've been designing mechs and vehicles for about 12 years now. I was introduced to a prog that did it for me about 4 months ago. I've used it about 5 times and stopped. It was just lacking something. I have several notebooks full of designs and am adding to them, though not as much as I used to. I do the math in my head and am almost correct when I figure values for weights and costs. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

Me;)
Just kidding. I used to use pencil and paper all the time...then I got a computer, and realized pencil paper was just obsolete. No point to it really...especially when I can print out the sheet I need to actually test the design in battle. _________________ "The enemy's gate is down."
