The Leopard is a noble beast but it can't change its spots.

Okay, I'm biased in favour of the Leopard because you can use it so many ways because of how small it is.

Given a Choice for 3 Leopards or a Union. I'd always take the Leopards, partially because of the full company of aerospace you can manage and partially because it lets you pick 3 different drop zones instead of just one.

Depending on what you need though a Leopard can frequently be too light to be much use. There is a reason why Unions are the standard in Dropship troop transports.

I see.So effective if used correctly,Right?
Well.I also prefer multiple drop points to just one. They ar also cheaper and easier to maintain.

I prefer Unions, with a Leopard CV for extra Aerospace assets. That way I have a semi-permanent fighter base in orbit all the time, without losing any mech transport capacity.

One point against the Leopard: minimal cargo capacity. That means there will be very few spare parts able to be carried on board. Though it makes it easier to enable fast troop redeployement without stranding saome of your forces. The Union can double as a mech repair bay while the Leopard can only faciltate the mechs leaving and entering the mech bays.

One-eye, read my comments in your biggest dropship post.

I agree with Seraph, Leopards are very limited vessels.

I don't really get much work out of dropships in general, but I normally treat Overlords like LS(T)s, Unions like Ducks, and Leopards like the Dingy boat.

For those who don't know the references:

Overlords carry the heavy stuff for a direct assault on a stonghold.

Unions are your general purpose transports.

Leopards are for quick and cheap transport (analagous to a river crossing, hence dingy boat). I use Leopards as Special Forces carriers from time to time. I've always said that the shape of the Leopard makes it less likely to stand out in the sky.

(It could be mistaken for jumbo jet. A really big jumbo jet. OK, it looks more like a jumbo jet than a Union does!)

The Spheroid dropship is descending on a pillar of flame, which should be visible to most all people with a set of Mk I eyeballs.

The Leopard comes down like a plane, which means it isn't as easy to spot without equipment. You'll hear it, but might not see it. And I'd imagine it's easier for the Aerodyne to change course once it's landing. This would make it a better choice for the commando stuff even if it wasn't the smallest common dropship.

I actually put them to some excellent use, during a long running campaign (its been on for over 2 years now), i managed to capture a temporary drop zone from the capellans. I did it so quickly i captured 2 Leopards. The next set of action rolls told me that a force of Capellan mediums and lights were moving through what i thought was impassable terrain to attack my forward command post which was relatively unguarded.

To end a long story short They are very useful for whipping forces across a planet in a short time for a small cost.

Just so you guys know, I took two lances of mediums and heavies, and the first enemy i ran into was a goddam Yu Huang which battered my two jagermechs. I did capture it though by getting a lucky gauss through the cockpit from my Hollander II.

So yes, i agree with Sabredance, they make great 'Dingy's'!!!

One thing to remember. Landing areas. Spheroids need a hardened surface to land on to avoid sinking into the ground. Aerodynes need a runway for take-offs and landings. Also, two aerodynes cannot land on a planets surface and have a hard time manuevering in the atmosphere. Achilles and Vengeance I think.
