Which Btech verison do you play. maps with hexes or just the terrain with no hexes? Or a combo of both.

Hexes, but not because I like them better, but because that's what I got.

Straight hexes, always have. Some like it without, but I think having the hexes makes the whole thing less complicated. Though I must admit some sites have posted some beautiful hexless battle pics.

I've noticed a lot of the sites with pics of Geohex terrain don't use hexes. Maybe that's because Geohex charges more money for terrain with hexes. But for me, I recently (at long last after many, many prevarications) bought myself the huge (2 large boxes) Master Terrain set with hexes for Christmas. I got them them through the archer's miniatures website, where they offer 15% off the Geohex price for an order under $100 and 20% off for over $100. Now I'm scrounging cash to buy some trees to go with the lichen I'm using for trees now.

I've always been a Hex guy myself. I think you probably knew that after seeing all my 3-D maps! I'm sure however, that playing on hexless is very fun, I've just never been involved in it.

Hexes.

Having played a lot on both hexes is by far the better.

Hex Maps.
I have both hex maps and terrain.

On the plus side, terrain has visual appeal
good for getting new players involved.
On the negitive side, a 4'x6' Geo-Hex gamemat scales out ot roughly 1 and a half mapsheets(that is if you go with a scale equal to the movement 1hex= 2"). Another negitive is the cost in all the hills, trees , buildings and such needed to do terrain.

The terrain does have good appearance.

Case in point: Yesterday was a gameday for the folks at RGC. And I ran a Btech game. But there was another group also running Btech. But with terrain. We where set up next to each other. As the day went on. They had players come over. Look at my set-up. ( 6 maps. level ground except for some hills. And one really big mountain that streched for 2 maps. I was running a Monte Diablo type of game.) Then looked at the terrian set-up (A green flet matt. with some small level 2 hills. And some blue flet ribbonds for water. It took up a whole pool table. And a two clusters of trees. In my opinon, It looked cheesy)All of them went for the terrain. Not some of them. Not most them, ALL OF THEM.

He ran a simple game. 2 lances of FC. up against 2 lances of the Dracs. That group had a line of players. While I had none. When asked why. They all said. "It looks cool"

Well, It is like I have always said, "Amercia will buy horsesh*t. If the package looks nice."

Because that group was looking in the rule books for everything. And even had to consult the To Hit chart. for a 7 roll to the front. They where not very good players. And kinda rude. And in one game that they where loseing bad. They used Artillary that was not listed on the map to get the upper hand and win the game.

OK, I have ranted enough, The bottom line is. The next time I go a game day. I am bringing a 3D hex map. With all the dressing. And show them how a real Battletech game is played.

I used a 4x8 foot sandtable. Shape the terrain for the scenario, throw down green felt over all to hold everything in place and require hex bases on all the mechs.

I found it really cheap compared to all the other stuff while remaining flexible. We generally used about half the table for most scenarios.

It was impressive when we had a Battalion Vs a Battalion with all the supporting units. Took forever too.

I perfer a combination of hexes and terrain, like what is at TotalCon. The hexes keep things honest, which is VERY important with some players, though I won't name names, there are a number in southern new hampshire who should just be shot out of hand cause of the amount they cheat. Of course, they like terrain because they can bend the rules, not with hexes!

I also like em cause its CHEAP. i'm a big fan of that cause i have no money. I am poor college student! Hell i'm paying my tuition, my car, and my parents house all in one. I barely have enough cash to buy a coke! LOL

That is a pretty good reason. Most game stores have a issue with giving out stuff with you paying for it.

Go figure?

Thanks for the plug Raven! That's actually why I built them in 3-D. Not only for the asthetics, but because of the arguing over levels; even after they came out with official maps with every level of every hex for every map. What a pain to pull that out when you're playing!

The maps look really cool, helping to attract new players and they keep all the moves honest and help players to move more quickly as all terrain features can be determined immediately.

Even on geo-hex with hexes, because of the sloping hills, levels can get confusing or debated. And the darn mechs don't stay standing up on the slopes!

You can check some cool pics though from Tom's and my geo-hex TotalCon scenerio at:

We bought the geo-hex years ago. Then I traded my dessert set to him for some shadowrun minis....what was I thinking?!

I made all the paper maps myself which can be seen at
