This doesn't quite fit in Bo's HGR thread, so it gets its own.
Do you think the merits of heavy gauss rifles are worth their drawbacks?
I never liked regular gauss rifles that much, so I'll say no. HGRs cost too much tonnage and take up too many crits to be worth the damage they give. 25 damage might be nice, but that's only within range six, and with a min range of four. And they explode when you hit them, which is the part I hate about gauss rifles. All told, I'd prefer the longer ranged LB20-X. You get more ammo per ton too. And no min range.

I agree. 25 damage in close is not enough to justify their weight and space. Its a fun weapon and definitly gets people excited when one connects at close range.

Any weapon that has to do that much damage on a single shot is a weapon of random luck.

I haven't played the HGR but I am not impressed with what I see. Next weekend will be the test; I have some friends considering brings one or two to the battlefield. _________________ "No good deed goes unpunished." - Michael Garibaldi

to heavy and the side effects are too much. 4 shots a ton, come on.... +25 damage up yo torso if it blows. Not good.
I like regular gauss rifles though, especially if the loadout is energy heavy.

They'd be worth it for the fun factor alone. Who wouldn't want en explosive gun that makes you fall on your butt?
But they're effective too. The Fafnir in Monte Diablo did horrible damage to the Davionists, destroying three mechs in our play of the battle.

The Hollander II Heavy Gauss variant is also very good, it makes a great ambusher of lighter wieght mechs.
The Heavy Gauss is a weapon to be used only in certain circumstances.

I'm a big fan of the regular gauss rifle ... in fact I believe it to be brokenly good ... but the heavy really isn't all that appealing to me. The 25 damage range is barely playable ... while the 20 damage range is in fact very very nice ... but still it's not that great. I would like to see a heavy gauss rifle on a lighter mech that can actually get out of it's own way ... but that doesn't usually happen. _________________ I know nothing.

Heavy Gauss Rifles are a good weapon but only as a back up for energy weapons, I do not like them for a primary weapons system. _________________ Think I fight unfair you can File all grevances with God, because I don't care.

But when you're "secondary" weapon system is 18 tons + ammo and 11 crits + ammo ... that's a lot of wasted space on a secondary system. No, you have to build the mech around something that huge or else you're not building much of a mech ... in my opinion. _________________ I know nothing.

I also prefer ACs and LB-X ACs to hgrs.To much weight. If i load any Grs on a mech, its gonna be Lgrs for the range. _________________ \"I will not have my ship shot out from under me FIRE!!!\"

i dont know any reason why should i use LGR, sure u pack tons of ammo but for just being 2 tons lighter, your damage drops immensely.
not a very good trade off, their range is nice, but it aint easy to keep nailing something at that range.

I never used it.
It suck me idea to make a PSR each time and
especially if is mounted on a light mech(BZK)
could be a problem(I'm unluky) Could be
a good idea to install it on a quad.

You know I'd argue that SRM's and LBX's are weapons of random luck as well. _________________ I know nothing.

Go ahead, I'd love to hear that logic.
