An Air National Guard pilot in an F-16, flying a night-time training mission, accidently shot up an elementary school located about 3.5 miles from the target range.

Gotta agree with that.
I also must say that that's a really stupid place to build a school. Did no one consider this possibility before the school was built? Why are school districts always run by damn fools?

Makes you realize why the people of Puerto Rico are up in arms about the navy target range down there.
This one definitely goes in the oops! department. _________________ "The enemy's gate is down."

Are those numbers for real? 7,000 feet up, firing at a ground target with a machine gun?

Uhmm...the gun on the F-16 isn't in the wing as the article reports...it's up on the side of the cockpit.
Wow...once more a reporter can't even do a little simple research.

The F-16 has it near the cockpit, but the F-15 has it in the wing root. Maybe the fool just can't count. Still, reporters never know what they're talking about. You'd think that one must gain at least a cursory understanding of the subject to tell others about it, but not them. I remember hearing a reporter talking about B-52s swooping down on their targets. B-52? Swoop? I don't think so.

you know, its articles like this that make me doubt the whole claim that 'Inner Sphere aerospace pilots are superior to Clan aerospace pilots.'
This one definitely goes in the 'Boo Boo' category.

A swooping B-52? Haven't you ever seen them in a strong downdraft?
Seriously though, I hate seeing basic mistakes being made by reporters. It makes the rest of the article hard to believe when the obvious facts are missed.

Maybe they meant the band...
Jonah Goldberg has an e-mail defending (a little) this guy in the NRO's Corner on the Nation...
IT WAS THE SCHOOLS FAULT! [Jonah Goldberg]
Just giving Airpower guy some grief. From him:
Jonah,
Re: strafing an elementary school.
Well, THAT would be a spirited debrief.
A couple of things:
-having a school 3.5 miles from a military firing range doesn't strike me as
the wisest zoning plan, and
-night range rides are challenging enough for guys who fly regularly, much
less Guardsmen who may not do this as often.
A nighttime bomb/strafe pass is disorienting enough as it is...sit in a
chair in a dark room, put a bag over your head, lean over one arm of the
chair, then roll out and stand up while staying bent 90 degrees at the
waist. That's about what it feels like to roll in on even a shallow pass in
the dark. Note: do this alone. Otherwise, Cosmo and the Fair Jessica might
start wondering about you...
This was a goof, obviously, but if he only fired 25 rounds, with a Vulcan
cannon, that was a really short burst, which leads me to believe he probably
thought something was wrong as soon as he pulled the trigger. Also, the
press reports said the bullets were made of lead. Um, I don't think
so--steel more'n likely.
Anyway, night ops can be really squirrelly even if you're current/proficient
and night range rides involve a lot of unnatural actions...thank God it was
only 20mm and that it happened on Wednesday, not Tuesday. Otherwise, I would not be surprised it being characterized as another attempt by Karl Rove to
intimidate Pennsylvania voters.
Cheers,
Instapilot

I think they meant lead in the same sense that you use 'lead minis' when you play Battletech. Its not Lead-lead, but something similar.
Thankfully, they werent explosive. Probably 'training rounds' or something. Makes a hole, but not much else.
