I've always thought it strange that Victor's the main character of many of the novels, the hero as it were, but so many people hate him. I'm not sure I've heard from anyone who likes the guy.
So, tell us what you think. Do you like Victor Ian Steiner-Davion? Do you dislike him? Do you not care? Tell us why, if you can.

I think it's a shame the Jade Falcons didn't wipe him out when they had the chance

I like him, he is perhaps to good in the later books, which seem to depict the Lyrans as bad and Davion as good during the FedCom war.
Have to admit, I prefer Kai, although he is a bit too good, he's a more dynamic character particularly in clan trilogy.
I much prefer books with lesser known characters which adds to the suspence. Thats why i enjoyed the Mechwarrior series.

My experience being exclusively from the updates and TROs and the Battletech TV series:
He's a good guy. Theodore Kurita was better, but he was a good guy. I've infinitely more respect for his parents (Hans and Mellissa) and they are admitedly a tough act to follow.
Victor's best asset seemed to be the way he kept his parent's friends on his side. Even when his sister took over the FedCom, Victor managed to keep a lot of the inner circle intact. He does get better with age. _________________ "Politics is the Art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, misdiagnosing the problem, and applying the wrong solution."

I have always liked Victor. sure he tries a little to hard, and makes some mistakes but for the most part his character has matured and grown in the universe as he should, (my opinion at least).
I am still trying to figure out how Sun Tzu was allowed to wage war and call it "unification" with out the other houses slapping him back into place. (But then most of house Laio's story line I have a problem with).

Well, he was the main character because most of those were Stackpole's books and then Coleman's. And Victor's position was of the centerpoint of most of the later story line of the entire BT universe, which make's him a character that's difficult NOT to have in the books, or at least referenced in some way.

Victor gets better with age, a sign that he was improving. Something everyone can relate to.

This is the first and only thing I've agreed with here. Gauss round anyone?
Interesting. I guess I just figured that no one liked Victor.
I liked him at first, actually. But now I very much hate him. But like Vagabond, I'll have more on that later.

I don't hate him, but I take issue with how the Battletech storyline has revolved around him for a while now. Lead the inner sphere against Smoke Jaguar, precentor marshall of comstar, commander of the 10th Lyran Guards, fought the civil war, fought Word of Blake in the Jihad, and he's in the dark age. I think he's an interesting charecter, but that's just way to much Victor.

No less believable than half their realm being taken over with hardly in explanation how that could happen.
