This has been done before (I searched), but there's new people around since then, so I figured that a new one couldn't hurt.

I'm just doing Inner Sphere (the major players), but feel free to tell us about your favorite Clan/Periphery state if you like.

So. If forced to choose one (1), what's your preferred faction? And why do you pefer them?

And maybe you could also tell us what you think about some of the others, as well. (Why you dislike someone, for example.)

I voted Capellan Confederation.

In 3025, Houses Liao and Kurita are absolutely my favourite: The latter because it has the most intrigueing politics (I LOVE Heir to the Dragon in a very fierce and major way...) and coolest units. House Liao, because it is the perpetual underdog, AND, because IMO, it has the best 'mechs (and this is a board game, after all!).

However, as you can see from my rank, my faction of preference are the Jade Falcons!

Several reasons: I first got introduced to the Clans via Mechwarrior II. And Clan Wolf was everybody's favourite!!!! So it was obvious for me to choose Clan Jade Falcon.

My all-time favourite 'mech is the Summoner/Thor. Period. Two things got me hooked on BT: TRO:3025 and the picture of the Thor in the old Compendium. It's as easy to pinpoint as that.

Of course, having the Jade Phoenix trilogy, as well as the other books by Thurston, didn't exactly make it harder to like the Falcons.

And: the Falcons actually survived the Refusal War without having their fiction twisted and, well, killed by some other authors!* When the Crusader Clans Field Manual came out, any and all feelings of pride were reinforced! (The Jade Falcons being one of the strongest all-round clans, including being the biggest bankers).

Oh, well, enough from me. I've been gone too long to get into fluff like this....

*I actually thought that the Blood of Kerensky trilogy and the 3 books after that were the best works by Stackpole. Books that I actually really, really liked! Of course, I also really like the Warrior trilogy. But I hate Prince of Havoc in a major way, and thought it really lame what happened to the Waco Rangers in Grave Covenant, despite liking the Falcons....

The Free Worlds League. I like their parlimentary politics and the fact that the people are the most free of any of the houses. I think its interesting that many people and regiments were loyal to their region instead of the nation itself. (Until Thomas came around ) I think the history of the Marik ruling family is the most interesting of the house families. I also like their mech designs, not always the best (but sometimes they are) but always different and identifiable.

To me, they don't seem as broadly drawn as the Federated Suns or Draconis Combine who have very obvoius and not creative cultures.

Now, if only we survied the jihad..

Well, I of course voted Federated Suns. Surprise, surprise.

I first encountered BattleTech in MechWarrior2 Mercenaries. I really had very little idea of who these states were then, but I came out liking the FedCom. When I found out the FedCom was the union of two states, I ended up choosing one. Everything I've come across since just makes that choice more right.

I just really like the Federated Suns, and the Davions. Especially history-wise; I think that they have the best history. I like how they started as a loose alliance, and ended up an absolute monarchy, and still managed to keep some sense of knowing that they're responsible to the people at large.

The units, the symbology (Sword and Sunburst), the culture, all of them suit me very well. I like all the little details of the FedSuns, which I can't say about the others. Some of that might be that I already like them, but most of it isn't. I was a BattleTech fan years before I knew much about the game, so the fiction has always been vastly more important to me than 'Mechs and such.

As for the others. The Lyrans I like, but just not as much as the FedSuns. Much of their second place status is due to Tharkad; I've always loved tundra.

The Combine comes next. Honorable in their own way, but me being FedSuns makes them a natural enemy. The samurai thing never appealed to me, either. The do have the best medal though: The Order of Wakazashi, which is awarded to those who put their own family's honor above the Dragon's. They get the nice, heavy medal, and are then granted the privilege of seppuku. The Combine is a bit more interesting than the Lyrans, and would be in second place if the Lyrans didn't have Tharkad.

The Capellans are evil little oppressors, and weak too. Their underdog-ness just makes it more fun to imagine them going down.

Last and least is Marik, the bland slaves of ComStar/WoB. Annoyingly confusing, I never really got them. I haven't read their House book yet, so I guess I'll have to. If there'd been more attention paid to them, I might've had more interest in learning about them.

Capellan Confederation.

I like the samarai mind set of Kuritan warriors. But my BT loyalties go to the Cappies. When I first started playing I was all gung-ho for the Dracs. Again, that samarai mind set. However, as I played more and started doing campaigns I began to realize I could identify with the Capellans. Always the least of the most powerful factions, always derided and ridiculed, kinda reminded me of when I was in school. But looking deeper, they have this resilience to get up and bounce back from whatever occured. "Never give up, never surrender", kinda attitude. Also the main overriding mindset is the people. There are a lot of Capellans but not much industry or agriculture. They have few worlds with adequate resources to have a socio-econimc system similar to the Lyrans or Free Worlders. Also they haven't the sheer military aptitude of the Kuritans or Davions. What they have is each other. They make do with what they have and they continue to thrive. Oppressive? Perhaps. But if you have only enough resources for 12,000,000 people on a planet and you have 15,000,000 on the planet then either get rid of some or all must reduce their intake. As a people minded people, they have reduced the overall requirements on those items that cannot be sufficiently supplied and make do without. As for their theological beliefs, yes the Chancellorship decrees what the overall religion is but there are still groups throughout the realm who are not mainstrteam religiously. But look to the Draconis Combine for similar attitudes. Yet perhaps worse in some ways.
Boils down to a few points. The Capellan Confederation has been losing battles since the Tikonov Commonality days. But they are still Capellans. They change with the times (really they do) but they remain Capellans. They lose half their realm in a very short time, yet they remain Capellans. Just ask Andrew Redburn, Victor Steiner-Davion, or Kai Allard-Liao if the "conquered" territories are really FedCom areas. They will answer yes publicly but in private will answer differently. More of an area of civil unrest at the best of times, at the worst it is a guerilla war. Capellans will reamin Capellans til the end. And perhaps even then.

i choose DCMS for the reason i like the samurai and i have a thing for Japanese anime and women . me and my friends don't play by the BT story, line we have ower own we fallow. we find the BT story line a bit on the dry side. but we love to play BT. we set up battles that can last 1-2 weeks of game play (and thats playing all day with only bathrooms, smoke, and Muncie breaks. )

Lyran Alliance...

Ever since I stumbled across BattleTech in...2nd Edition...I think, the *then* Lyran Commonwealth was my instant favorite. I dunno why, but, I am pretty sure it was the fact that the LCAF tended to be a formidable millitary oppisition (despite its mercantile roots) and, had pretty much the hand on all my favorite designs.

FS.

I liked the logo.

Give me a break, I was six.

Now I like them because Hanse Davion was the most interesting (and I would argue most empathetic) of the Successor lords. I liked Melissa Steiner, so I had an obvious love for the FC. Victor was OK, though I think the only reason he did as "well" as he did was because he had decent help.

In the late period, Theodore Kurita was my favorite leader.

I could also justify a Rasalhaguian loyalty. Got to love the underdog fighting for independence (as opposed to the Capellans, who are underdogs fighting or tyrany.)

I'm a Fed Rat. I've always identified with the Davion philosophy. Besides, someone's gotta save those poor misguided souls slaving away under MadCap tyranny.

I got involved with battletech before there was any major source material on the houses. I ended up identifying more with Davion due to their fairly forthright attitude.
Steiner was to mercantile/ germanic. Marik too balkanized/disorganized. Liao and Kurita were just too bloody minded (Maskirovka and ISF are BAD, not cool). Gotta remember I was looking at the universe before there was a fed-com. As the source material came out, I continued with Davion simply because they seemed to be more of the "we ended up warriors because it is and imperfect universe" rather than "it is our right to conquer" mindset. Liao and Kurita have that in spades.
