I find these to be rather interesting. "These" being the various recent family trees of the Five Great Houses. A cursory look at them reveals that all five Houses are interrelated. Does anyone else find that strange?

Edit: Word change. Wasn't quite saying what I meant to.

You can't just go about marrying peasants when you aspire to be the First Lord, can you? Enemy Houses may be enemies, but at least they're almost as well-bred as your own. Taking a spouse from their family may be political at times.

Just like the European Royal Houses are more or less related, no matter how many wars they've fought in the last 300 years.

Hmm.. I suppose so, though I never really thought of it that way. I suppose it just doesn't fit with the image of these people as having been enemies for centuries. Especially since troops are often referred to with the ruler's surname. It takes some of the "two sides who hate each other" element out of a Davion vs. Kurita fight if you can look at someone named Davion-Kurita.

It's a matter of class. Autocratic rulers depend upon one another to keep the lower classes in their "place."

Minor addition: among the European Houses, the woman had no claim to her father's territory. If her father died, her husband could make a claim. The woman, however, joined her husband's family.

This is, for example, why Henry IV-VI of England could justify war against France, and why Catherine, a German, could rule Russia.

I imagine something similar is going on here. All the women are simply changing sides. The men still hate each other.

Steiner and it's pentient for women Archon's would tend to muddy this idea...
