==Overview:==
It will be many years before the losses incurred by the AFFS's WarShip fleet
during the Civil War can be made good. In the meantime, the AFFS has need of a
troop DropShip which will have some chance of defending itself from WarShip
attack. Not surprisingly, the AFFS turned to Federated-Boeing Interstellar to
for a design meeting this requirement.
Federated-Boeing almost immediately chose to base the design on the
Conquistador, in order to minimize research and development costs and time.
They also made a special point of interviewing the crews of the Conquistador
class DropShips which led Duke Tancred Sandoval's attack through the WarShip
blockade around New Avalon in June of 3066.
The result of barely four months of design work was the Azrael class assault
DropShip. Ten thousand tons heavier than the Conquistador, the Azrael is
tougher and more heavily armored than its forebear. It also slightly increases
the Conquistador's carrying capacity with the addition of bays for a company's
worth of lighter vehicles; ideally, these would be hovertanks, to complement
the company of heavy armor already present. Also added are two more fighter
bays, allowing the Azrael to carry a full wing of aerospace fighters without
being subjected to the types of modifications most Conquistador's recieve. (In
the AFFS, an organized aero wing adds a command flight, for a total of 20
fighters.)
The Azrael has only a small increase over the Conquistador's conventional
weaponry; only a few PPCs and pulse lasers are added, while the AMS cannons
have been replaced with newer laser based systems. The primary enhancement to
the Azrael (and it's primary reason for existance) is the single capital scale
Kraken-T missile launcher in the ship's nose. This weapon gives the Azrael a
decent punch against WarShips. While not even several Azraels can be counted
on to destroy a WarShip, such heavy wepaons in a DropShip group complicate
things for a WarShip commander.Since most Inner Sphere WarShips trade armor
for weapons, a lighter WarShip with a careless or overzealous commander might
even give several Azraels oppurtunity to disable the WarShip. In an
environment devoid of enemy WarShips, an Azrael's capital missiles can inflict
very heavy damage on opposing DropShips.
Everything else about the Azrael is essentially identical to the Conquistador,
although some systems are upscaled. The command and control facilities, heavy
automation, and thrust vectoring system are all present in the Azrael. While
it maintains the Conquistador's ability to function as a field hospital,
lessons learned in the Civil War mean that DropShips of the AFFS are as likely
to stay in orbit as on the ground. With its heavy firepower, this is doubly
true for the Azrael.
