I was perusing the free parts of this book on classicbattletech.com, and noticed in one of the stories they described a pilot moving his 'mech's arm and hand my means of moving his own arm, and having a net of sensors attached to his arm translate his movement into the 'mech's movement...just one of those things that goes against how operating a 'mech has been described up to this point.

IIRC some mechs are described as having control gauntlets if you wish to use the mech hands for anything finer than bashing stuff.

But sensors for the whole arm? Why, when you can have it all hardwired to the machine keeps arm weapons pointed at a designated target? Unless this net is part of a better control gauntlet for fine operations I don't see what they were thinking.

'Mechs with hands DO have control gloves for advanced manipulation of the 'mechs appendages. I remember it from reading some novel or other

It did save the guy's life; his 'mech was crashing after a botched hot-drop, and instead of the 'mech's head hitting the ground he brought the arm up and the arm hit instead....seems like a useful trick to block head shots

Note that these gloves are NOT for battle use. In battle, a mechwarrior's hands are on his arm-mounted control sticks or are working the control panel in front of him. The gloves are for delicate work, subtle manipulations of the hands and arms. Gross maneuvers like general movement of the arm or making a fist and punching are controlled through a combination of moving the control sticks and a neural interface through the neurohelmet. (so says Christopher Kubasik in Ideal War).

I have always regarded mechs with hands having a waldo system. For most tasks the simple combat controls are used, but for fine work a set of "virtual reality" gloves are used. Kicks and punches and such could be simple subroutines in the computer, but picking up objects that could be lying anywhere and of varying fragility would require a finer control system.

I'd imagine the gloves would have to be equipped with a feedback system that would prevent the pilot from squeezing down too hard if he didn't want to crush whatever he was picking up.

Not a pefect idea. What if he does want to crush it?
