explain to me how an ECM does anything to make a mech harder to hit or more protected?

ECM dosen't block TCs or Streaks.

Only things like NARC, Artimes IV, and maybe TAG.

woopty f'in doo.

So how does this protect you any?

It also disrupts C3/C3i. But I'm not too familiar with its usage...

It doesn't work against TAG.

Liao's instant legions of new Stealth mechs all need an ECM suite for their Stealth armor.

BTW, when did they take away the effect on Streak missiles? I'm pretty sure it used to work on them, denying the Streak feature for firing on units in the ECM bubble. Or am I hallucinating?

You're quite right, ECM is usually just a waste of 1.5 tons and two crits.

I think only Angel ECM works againsts Streaks. But i'm not very familiar with lvl 3 rules.

I don't think ECM is a waste. Even if it only works against those items mentioned it will still help. ECM on a fast mech is also good for disrupting C3 networks.

A system i hardly see deployed do to the general crapiness of the mechs mounting the system. I'll give it to you that it has it uses, but i always see this phrase pop up, "the good armor plus the ECM means people will have hard time killing this mech."

HOW?

Doesn't it also give a general minus To-Hit against the ECM-equipped 'mech at range? Or is that just Stealth armor?

It doesn't actually make a 'Mech harder to hit. But it does make useless a few of the things which make them easier to hit. Knocking the Artemis off someone's SRMs doesn't help much, but it does help some. Same with killing TAG. Cutting back C3 also helps. It's not a major difference, but it is some difference. I tend to put ECM on designs if I have them room, since it might come in handy.

Where do you see this said? If I mention ECM in fluff, I never really say that it makes it harder to hit. I say that it makes the 'Mech harder to detect (protects you from Beagle) and disables some advanced targeting systems. Note the word 'some' - it doesn't do them all.

And I love Angel ECM.

Yeah, I don't see it used very often on combat mechs. I see it on scouts and skirmishers.

If I have reason to believe that a unit I'm facing has C3 or C3i or uses excessive ammounts of targetting equipment, I might rip off a weapon or two to temporarilly mount ECM, but that's about it.

ECM doesn't block TAG, but it does block Sensor Probes like BAP, etc. Of course, BAP is also fairly useless as well in most situations unless you're using level 3 rules. ECM also doesn't block Streak either, unless you're doing level 3. And yes, ECM also blocks C3 as well. If the line of sight from C3 mechs pass through the radius of an enemy's ECM, the C3 mech's lose their targeting bonus. So in that situation, ECM is VERY useful, but then, how often might you run across a unit with a fully connected C3 system? And there is also of course the RPG uses as well. But then, when RPGing, almost everything tends to get a greater use.

It should also jam comm traffic; it think it also masks you from active probes, which is useful if you're laying an ambush.

For clanners, carrying ECM knocks out the Inner Sphere's biggest advantage against you, the C3 network. That's worth a couple of tons on your omnimech.
