------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The sight of BattleMechs lumbering across the terrain is a familiar one
among the worlds of the Inner Sphere. None more memorable then the sight of an
Atlas, which still manages to make even experienced MechWarriors break out in
a sweat and brings the bitter taste of bile to their mouths.
The Atlas was designed as a last-ditch attempt to ensure the superiority
of the Star League's Regular Army over the growing armies of the House Lords.
It was an understandable reaction to the Cameron edicts passed from 2751 to
2761 by the High Council, which permitted the five Lords to double the size of
their personal armies. General Kerensky himself set down the specifications
for the Atlas. He said it should be "a 'Mech as powerful as possible, as
impenetrable as possible, and as ugly and foreboding as conceivable, so that
fear itself will be our ally."
==Capabilities:==
Ugly and foreboding are two apt descriptions for the Atlas. Though some
'Mechs might be newer and better, none have the Atlas' aura. Considerable
effort went into making the Atlas' weapons as visible as possible, giving an
opposing MechWarrior plenty of opportunity to see that he is outgunned and to
decide he is not being paid enough to die, and designers spent an entire year
fashioning the head and cockpit to create a perfect merging of function and
gruesomeness, which resulted with MechWarriors nicknaming the Atlas "Death's
Head". These features and ideas were not lost on Steiner engineers as they
upgraded there Atlas models.
The Atlas was the first 'Mech to mount such a large and devastating
autocannon. Even though it only carried ten rounds for its Class 20 AC, the
mere threat of such a large autocannon is often enough to send some 'Mechs
scurrying. The weapon's only problem is that it lacks a cooling jacket and can
overheat easily. This is why engineers decided to use the recently developed
Defiance Thunder Ultra Class 20 AC from Defiance Industries of Hesperus II,
which has an impressive thirty rounds and lacks the cooling issues of the
original.
The Atlas' long-range missile delivery system is a unique design. Upon
discovering that 20 launching tubes would not fit into the 'Mech's torso, the
designers decided to install five tubes with a feed system that can shoot four
salvos within ten seconds. This system was retained but fires only three
salvos instead of four. In addition, the system has been tied to a TharHes
Artemis IV FCS to increase the accuracy of the remaining salvos.
Many other systems have also been upgraded including the four medium
lasers. Engineers noted that the Atlas generally suffers from long range
deficiencies compounded by slow speeds. To counter this, the four medium
lasers have been upgraded to extended range models. In addition to this
change, engineers modified the SRM missile systems have been moved from the
left torso to the right torso to make room for a new CASE protected ammo bin,
but engineers have managed to reduce exterior modifications of the system to
the point that only a critical eye would notice the difference. In the end,
the most significant upgrade has been the addition of double strength heat
sinks to counter the massive heat this 'Mech can produce.
These upgrades will allow the aged Atlas to remain the 'King' of the
battlefield despite numerous other 'Mechs using more advanced weapons and
materials. For decades, the House Lords have not tampered with success.
However in this case, House Steiner did not tamper. They only updated an
already proven design.

Seriously needs some long-range firepower.
Up close, i don't want to mess with it. But if i fight it i'll keep my distance.

A pretty vanilla Atlas upgrade but i really miss the Doombud LRM-20 for long range firepower. However, the Artemis will compensate for that as the LRMs will have better groupings. The mech does have alot of AC-20 ammo though, so dont be shy about it.
Personally i would have drop the SRM-6 for a streak 4 if it was possible. Plentifully amount of dhs enable the monster to fire the UAC and the SRM with the 2 forward facing lasers is a nice touch.
Only gripe i have it is too ammo dependent, same as my variant. If the ammo is gone, the fighting power is nearly gone too, however the Atlas isnt a laser or ppc boat anyway and excessive use of those removes it charm.

Group it with long-range assault mechs. Thunder Hawks, Devastators, Hauptmanns etc. Someone who closes in to get the long-range fighters meets the Atlas.
