Okay, here is my attempt to describe the 3 events I ran on Saturday.

Lord of the Mountain: It’s the Graduation Exercise for Comguard`s Class of 3067. Can you be the only survivor of this close range mountainous slugfest? Bring any 35 to 60 Ton Inner Sphere official Fanpro Mechsheet. Mechs with jump jets are allowed, but jump jets will not function. Gun/Pilot skills will be scaled down from the Mech with highest BV. Level 2 rules with random initiative & secret fire declaration. 3-D Hex Map Board. Beginners welcome!

I had only planned for 10 players for this game, but I wound up with 13. No PROB! The more, the merrier and the more CHAOS! As in all my games, each player had 1 minute to move, and when everyone finished, 3 more minutes to write down their fire secretly. Initiative was determined randomly by passing out playing cards, ace through king, face down to each player. Thus they knew when they would move, but not the order of people after them. Highlights began in the first round. Hardware backed his Hunchback up against a level 2 at the bottom of the mountain…excellent defense, but CSS Herod had enough move to get adjacent behind him with his Diaymo and let rip, causing serious damage and destroying the AC20. Hardware, not feeling too well already after a hard day’s gaming on Fri, popped his hatch and bid adieu. Meanwhile, I in my Bushwacker and Dave, and one other player were thrashing on a PHawk in the NE corner of the board. The battle raged on with most mechs taking moderate damage for the first half dozen rounds. One player Tom, was doing a good job hiding from the carnage in an Anvil, biding his time to come out and finish the stragglers. Which he eventually did and was one of the last 4 to still be functioning later on. One player, Mike, had been harassing many a mech with his mint Centurion-Yen lo Wang, AC20 variant, when he underestimated the movement capability of a -----with 3x myomer, who proceeded to get behind “KAI” and punch him in the back of the head for 12 points….say goodnight gracie! The same player had already capped someone with his AC20, holy headhunter Batman! Jay had a Rifleman-D variant and at one point was at 39 heat. No one could finish him off before he cooled off and got a few more good damaging shots off. I made the mistake of closing with Mordel in his Hunk-of-Junk, and after he walloped me, I fell, and went sleepy-sleepy, then the RAT-BASTARD,oops, I mean his holiness, finished me off. Nate was flying around the bottom of the mountain in his Lightray, using his TC to finish off mechs who had crippling weaknesses. I believe he wound up with 4 kills to his credit. The last 3 mechs were Nate, Dave, and Mordel-who wound up unconscious for the last 7 rounds. It would have been fitting if Nate and Dave would have finished each other off simultaneously and Mordel would have woken up and won. But not to be. Nate polished off dave, and Mordel woke up (finally) the same turn, however he had no arms or weapons, and could not win initiative.* Nate destroyed him, winning the event and also having the most kills-Well Done Nate! *

Blood of the Samurai: In 3058, the Word of Blake forces wrestle control of Terra from Comstar. In Nagoya Japan, a small fierce battle takes place between Blakists and Samurai at their lord’s manor . Death will come before dishonor. Level 2 rules with secret fire declaration. 3-D Hex Map Board. Beginners welcome!

This event had 10 players, 5 a side. The snakes, 2 Komodos (Douglas),a Raven (Me), a Catapult (Chihawk), and a Crusader (Korak) were defending their lords manor house and the lord himself who was piloting an Archer (CSS Herod). All defenders had Semi-Guided missiles, along with 3 lrm 15 gun emplacements.

The attackers had 2 Exterminators(Jay), aRaijin (Aadil), a Thug and Kintaro (Dave) and a --- and all were of course equipped with C3i and many had iNarcs with a good spread of special ammo; explosive, haywire, homing, nemesis. The Wobbies attacked from the northern edge of three maps from the newest set, 2 archapelegos, and a shoreline. The tide was out, so there was no water, but all water was rough, for movement purposes. Naturally the Wobbies used the roads to get from island to island. Doug used the ECMs on his two Komodos to effectively cut off the lead Wobbies from the C3i, forcing them to all move forward together. I successfully tagged 3 different mechs which then took heavy damage from the combined LRM fire. The Komodos did well in tying up 3 of the WOB, and Jay Masc’ed his Exterminator through the rough and took out the Manor House with weapons fire. He then took some return fire, and was in the process of battling the near mint Archer, when we ran out of time. He was effectively cut off from the rest of his lance and it was very doubtful that CSS wouldn’t have crippled him with help from the Cat and Crusader. My Raven got shot out from under me by Jay’s brother- Aadil in his Raijin, a few turns before the end. Every year this kid (now about 13) destroys me once or twice per Con! I call him a NIT…….Nate…In….Training. Overall it was very fun, mostly due to the non-weapon equipment; semi-guided lrms, tags, ecms, narcs, inarcs, c3i, masc, etc. *Best Player Winner: Doug*

Ruins of House Hiritsu: It’s 3061, and a lance of BattleMechs from this proud Liao Warrior House are in for a rude awakening. Ambushed by Mercenary Arcadians in the city of Nashuar, St Ives Compact, they fight for honor. The Mercs fight for money. Both now fight for their lives. Level 2 rules with secret fire declaration. 3-D Hex Map Board.

This battle took place at night on the giant level 6-level 13 mountain maps, covered with buildings. The elite pilots from Liao (2/3) were a Jinggau (Dave), Yu Huang (Jay), Lao Hu, and Men Shen, were ambushed by us veteran Mercs (3/5); Crusader (Hardware), 2 Shadow Hawks (Me and Douglas), Griffin (Casey), Warhammer, Ph. Hawk, &Wolverine (Aadil). All us Mercs had searchlights, and the Liao had all been previously narc’ed by infantry. The Liaos objective was to cripple/destroy 5 of us and then get off any map edge. Ours was to survive, and cripple them.

Line of sight was a tough job in this battle. We would try to spotlight a mech and get as many of us to fire on him as possible. Whatever mech did the spotting would get hammered in return (now also being lit up thus canceling the +2 nigth mod) and always had his spotlight shot out. Except for Hardware…. The turn he spotted no Liao fired on him! So in a subsequent turn he boasts for someone to try to shoot it off him and he winds up getting head-capped from the Jinggau from behind partial cover-ouch! His crusader was the only level 1 mech on the board, but I thought he should have piloted it as it was his favorite mech even 20 years ago when we started playing this game. Casey in the Griffin was the only one of us who started behind them and he moved and fired very effectively. The Men Shen and Jinggau eventually broke our line and crippled the Wolverine after a drawn out chase. The rest of us took out the Lao Hu with combined fire. Looking to score “Style Points” Jay DFA’d me with the 90 tonner, but he couldn’t put me down, he would have done more damage (and none to himself) had he fired on me and kicked me. The next turn he moved to the edge off the level 6 hill. Well, I just had to return the favor so with Casey and a Warhammer next to him, I moved in to, and after the fire phase I pushed him off the hill. Luckily for him he actually only fell 3 levels (the access road is adjacent at that point on the map) but it was enough to crumple him and take a nap. Casey tried his hardest to finish him, while the rest of us went to rescue the Wolverine. He just couldn’t get it done. When Jay finally woke up he tried to DFA Casey, (still don’t know why) and he killed himself. We ran out of time again, and since the Liaos hadn’t completed their objectives, I gave the win to the Mercs. *Best player went to Dave, who piloted his Jinggau very effectively.*

That about wraps it up, if anyone else remembers more details please add to it!

5 guys asked me if I was going to do HorhiroCon II, at my house again, so I’m trying to put together some ideas and I’ll let you all know very soon….looks good!

I ran three slots based on and around Rednecks..

Kurita has invaded one of the periphery planets and the Rednecks are trying to save all that is important (their moonshine)..

The first battle would be considered the first encounter. Two heavily modified Archers against 6 Kurita mechs. The intent of the scenario was to see if the two mechs could hold out against the incoming mechs. Due to my poor planning (I left my main package of mechs and all my minis at home...), I ended up using my spare package of mechs that I had printed out, and pulled in two extra medium mechs instead of the two lights that were supposed to be there. The Rednecks got spanked.. Dave was one of the Kurita pilots, and he had that team working like a wel oiled machine, they split into two teams of three and blocked the paths of the Rednecks, keeping them from getting off the board. Dave won the table.

The second game had our heros trying to recover a caravan of stolen moonshine. The Kuritans had to move the shine off the northern board for a minor victory, or get all their mechs off for a major victory.. The Rednecks had to stop the shine from leaving for a minor, and kill the kuritans for a major..

The rednecks were again outnumbered 6 to 4. The map was the new mapset with the islands connected by bridges, and the Rednecks were smart and blew a bridge pretty much wiping out the chance to get the shine off, so eventually the Kuritans got smart and blew the trucks, rather irritating the rednecks. The Rednecks played it very well and concentrated fire each turn wiping out the Kuritans who continuously split their fire and didn't take out a single Redneck as they all died. The winner of the table was one of the new players, but the best player on that table was really a toss up between Casey, or Darryl.

The third scenario was designed to be almost impossible for the Rednecks to win. Seems someone told the Kuritans that Billy Joe-Bob is the leader of the resistance on planet and they set out to kill him. The last battle was 6 on 3, and the Kuritans only had to kill Billy Joe Bob to win. The Rednecks had to get him off the south edge of the board. For some reason, the Kuritans decided to try to kill his buddies Bubba Rae, and Daisy Mae instead of him.. They ended up dying instead. It was a great example of a team forgetting what the victory conditions were... Darryl or Dave were the best players on that table..

It was an interesting set of three scenarios. Kind of odd... very unbalanced... but I think most folks had at least a little fun..

First off, I had a great time in them.

But the other team didn't forget who to kill, I just gave them a better target.

When it became obvious we were outgunned and "out meched" I told Dave to head to the water where our lasers outranged theirs (plus they has ACs and missiles which wouldn;t work there )...but when we headed for the shoreline I saw where the Kurita mechs were headed and decided to swing back on land and go claim the woods hexes.

Then I sent Mordel's favorite target (Kile) out to snipe at them and they decided to fight her even though she wasn't much of a threat to them. That was their biggest blunder as that gave us enough to time to get to where we had the territorial advantage and then it was all over.

BTW, for those that have never used them--armless mech rock.

Mordel upsets Casey to win TotalCon Battletech Championships

Despite easily walking through his first two opponents #1 seed Casey fell to #3 seed Mordel Blacknight in the Battletech Championships at TotalCon this past weekend. Mordel swept the best-of-3 final 2-0.

Mordel dispatched #6 Hardware in a tight match and then slugged the #2 seed Dave Hruska into submission to advance to the finals. Casey, who received a automatic invite into the tourney, easily dispatched #10 seed Coffee Boy in one of the most one-sided duels seen in recent memory. Casey then defeated the #4 seed Nate "Master of Corn Chips" Jokel in a slugfest of assaults.

Coffee Boy won vs #7 seed Merl in a mild upset by scoring a golden BB in the CT to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

The rounds leading up to the finals were all single elimination duels with the higher seeded player getting first pick of mechs and deciding what board to play on. The higher seeded player also would win all ties rolled in the initiative phase. Each player also received one point of "edge" per battle.

In the finals Casey and Mordel were given the same three mechs (Enforcer, Phoenix Hawk, and Centurion) and had to secretly declare in what order they would be played. Each player would have 2 points of edge for the round, and in battles 1 & 3 Casey would win all initiative ties, while Mordel would win them in battle #2.

In round one Casey chose the Enforcer and Mordel chose the PH. Casey had map choice and chose the Deep Canyon #1 map. This worked to Mordel's advantage as he could then jump to break LOS when his PH over heated. Mordel won the very long battle.

In round two Mordel chose the Enforcer and Casey the PH. Mordel had map choice and selected City Street Grid/Park #1. As there was no where to hide when the Casey's PH over heated he was slowly picked apart by Mordel.

Qualifying round:
#8 Chris(?) defeated #9 Aadil
#10 Coffee Boy defeated #7 Merl

Quarter finals:
#1 Casey defeated #10 Coffee Boy
#2 Dave Hruska defeated #8 Chris(?)
#3 Mordel defeated #6 Hardware
#4 Nate defeated #5 John O'Leary

Semi-finals
#1 Casey defeated #4 Nate
#3 Mordel defeated #2 Dave

Finals:
#3 Mordel defeated #1 Casey, 2-0
